FORREST J. SMITH, lumber dealer, was born in La Crosse County, four miles east 
of the city of La Crosse, Jan. 22, 1853; is the son of O. H. Smith, general 
clerk and book-keeper in the office of David Law's freight and omnibus line. 
He lived with his parents, attending the common and public schools until 1870, 
when he became engaged in the lumber business, following it at the present 
time.
