He followed house-painting in Scotland, from the age of 14 till he came to the United States, and has followed the same business since 1867. In 1861, he enlisted in the 14th W. V. I., Co. D, and was in the service until the close of the war. He was married, in La Crosse, in 1866, to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of James McCra, of Canada, and has four children - Elizabeth, Mary, Robert and Margaret.
