Y. He remained here until about 20 years of age, attending the common schools, and during the last few years of this time, in working on a farm. He removed to Lansingburg, Rensselaer Co., N. Y., and learned the carpenter's trade and commenced work for himself in 1847. In 1848, he removed to California, returning to Lansingburg in the latter part of 1850. In 1852, he again went to California, remaining there about eighteen months, engaged in contracting. In 1854, he returned to New York, and in the spring of 1855, removed to La Crosse, where he entered the lumber business, following it for two years; then worked at his trade for a short time, when he went into the wheat business, subsequently returning to the lumber business, which he has since successfully conducted.
