His father, John Walter, came to America in 1859; settled in Buffalo Co., Wis., and died there in 1876. John Walter, Jr., went to St. Louis, Mo., in the spring of 1857, and was in the commission business there four years; then kept a provision store there till 1866, when he came to La Crosse, and has been in his present business ever since. In 1861, he was in the military service three months, in Co. G, 4th Mo. V. I. He was married in La Crosse, in the spring of 1866, to Anna Wendler, and has four children - Henry, Oscar, Della and Mary.
