Johnson ebjohnso@facstaff.wisc.edu 11:34 10/23/1999 ************************************************************************ La Crosse County Record Vol. XVI Onalaska, Wisconsin, Thursday, February 14, 1901 Num. 18 Died Mrs. Maria Behring died very suddenly at the home of her daughter Mrs. Struck at 11:45 o'clock Saturday forenoon February 9th, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 27 days. The funeral was held from the German Lutheran church Monday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Thurow officiating. Undertaker A. E. Smith had charge and the pall bearers were John Schaller, August Pralle, Fritz Holthaus, Carl Schmidt, Fritz Gantert and Henry Asmus. The remains were buried in the Onalaska cemetery beside those of her husband who died fourteen years ago. The funeral was quite largely attended and the hearse bearing the remains was followed to the cemetery by a large number of friends. Mrs. Behring was born in Germany and came to Onalaska in the spring of 1881. She was a good woman and a faithful member of the German Lutheran church. Of late years she has bad her home with her daughter Mrs. Struck and son Hilmuth, the latter especially who is yet unmarried has been a true son to his aged mother and as it were a father to the family. Nine children were born to deceased, all of whom are living to mourn a loving mother's death, except the youngest child, a son who died when quite young. The children living are Fritz of Cataract, Herman, Hilmuth, Mrs. Struck and Mrs. Albright of Onalaska, William, Rika and Birdie who yet live in Germany. Mrs. Behring attended church the Sunday before her death and spoke during the week of attending again the next Sunday. She was up yet Saturday morning but not feeling well her son Hilmuth did not go to his work as usual but remained at home to help take care of this mother. She was assisted into bed about nine o'clock after which she gradually grew weaker and very peacefully died fifteen minutes before noon. She was conscious to the end and seemingly died without a pain.
