Johnson ebjohnso@facstaff.wisc.edu 11:44 10/23/1999 ************************************************************************ La Crosse County Record Vol. XXXXVII Onalaska, Wisconsin, Aug. 11, 1932 Num. 42 Obituary Louis Otto, Sr., was born June 15, 1865*, in Saxony, Weimer, Germany, and came to America in 1886 where he settled at Mauston, Wis. After living there a few years he came to Onalaska where he has since made his home. He was united in marriage to Frieda Albrecht of Onalaska on March 28, 1889**. Mr. Otto passed away August 4th at 5:15 p.m. at his home in Onalaska at the age of 69 years, one month and 20 days. He is survived by his wife, Frieda; nine children, William, Louis, Jr., Herbert, Ernest, Mrs. Emil Christopherson, Elsye and Elizabeth of Onalaska, Mrs. Frank Podell of Zion, Ill., as well as one brother, John, of Chicago, Ill., and thirteen grandchildren. Two children preceded him in death. Mr. Otto was a member and director of the famous Onalaska Gold band for a number of years and also played in the Onalaska band for years before and after this organization was so famous. He worked for years in the employ of the C. H. Nichols Lumber Company here and later worked for the Aiken Coal & Lumber Company of this city. He received a severe injury a number of years ago while at work on a barn and before his death he was ill for a long time. He was a well respected and industrious citizen and will be greatly missed from our midst. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:15 at the home and at 2:30 from the German Lutheran church in this city. Rev. J. H. Schwartz of West Salem officiated and Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Smith of Onalaska were in charge. The pall bearers were P. M. Peterson, Aug. Pralle, Sr., Wm. Schmidt, Henry Holthaus, Fred Holthaus, Sr., and T. G. Aiken. Interment was made in the Onalaska cemetery. Those from a distance who were here to attend the funeral included Mr. And Mrs. Frank Podell and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Peacock of Zion, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Otto, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Otto, daughter and husband, Mrs. Gust Otto, Mrs. Henry Otto and mother of Mrs. Ed. And Mrs. Henry Otto, all of Mauston. Helmuth Buhring and Louis Struck of Cuba City and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Struck of Cazenovia. * Actual birth year is 1863 ** Actual marriage year is 1890
