J. Carpenter, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin This biographical sketch is reprinted from Andreas, History of the State of Nebraska, which is in the public domain and parts of which are now on-line. I have indicated errors with (sic) but have otherwise reproduced this text just as it appeared in the book. L.J. CARPENTER, stock-raiser, Section 29, Mission Creek, Pawnee County, Neb., was born in Franklin County, Ohio, and reared in Lafayette County, Wis., where he carried on the agricultural and stock industry until 1876 (sic), when he came here and has been actively connected with the same industry here since, making, however, as a specialty the introduction of breeding of thoroughbred runners, Ethan Allen trotting horses, of which his stable who shows a nice variety. His family consists of one daughter, married, Lorinda P., now Mrs. Peter Bowhay; Lucien L. (sic), and Lura Myrtle. He was married in 1856, to Miss parmelia (sic) E. Howe, who was born in Morrow (sic) County, Ohio, and reared in La Fayette (sic) County, Wis. [Notes: The writer reverses "e" and "a"; the family Bible, written by Permelia herself, clearly gives "Permelia" and "Lucian." 1876 is questionable, as Leander and his wife came to Nebraska in 1866. Their son Lorenzo, b. 1863, was killed by oxen on the trip west in 1866. It is possible they settled somewhere else in 1866, then moved to Mission Creek in 1876, but I suspect a typo. There was no Morrow County in Wisconsin; the writer probably meant "Monroe."] File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/wi/lafayette/bios/carpente15gbs.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/wifiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
