M. Arneson opened his Land Office and store 1899 — Blanchardville's first band 1899 — School district tax was $496.82 1900 — Rose Gould and Mazie Munson were clamming in the Pecatonica River below Water Street and Rose discovered a pearl that sold for $500. 1907 — 283 patrons listed in telephone book 1907 — First girls' basketball team. They wore bloomer suits 1912 — Mrs. A. McKellar left Chicago by train to attend the National W.C.T.U. Convention in Portland, O. 1912 — Glenn Robb substitute mail carrier for Christ Vickers is making his rounds on a motorcycle. 1913 — Every third overcoat sold at Monson's Store sold for 9 cents 1914 — Joe Knorr's house built 1914 — Blanchardville State Bank and Citizen's State Bank consolidated and known as Union State Bank 1914 — Etta Bainbridge's Millinery Shop is advertising Tango hats for July 4th. 1914 — Village added more road drags and a two horse grader for better roads 1914 — Appendicitis operation performed at home by local doctor assisted by Dr. Dean of Madison. Mary Wilberg, R. N. cared for patient, Genevieve Coffey. 1914 — Thompson and Robb installed new electric piano in ice cream parlor 1914 — Electric lights installed in depot 1914 — A 20,000 ft. statue is put on the dome of new Capitol Building in Madison 1915 — Speaking contest — Roa Craft, 1st, Addie Sardeson, 2nd, Ella Baker, 3rd. In declams, John Cather, 1st — Oration, Bernard Larson, 1st, Murray Mason, 3rd. 1916 — Lutherans built their new church 1916 — Basketball introduced at Blanchardville High School 1916 — Blanchardville Commerical [sic] Club disbanded 1918 — Herbert Dobson, first casualty in World War I 1918 — Haldiman and Ingwell got Ucense for pool hall in basement of their building 1919 — Blanchardville is having all day electric service now 1919 — Board voted to regulate motor speed limit within village limits 1920 — Motorist got letters from Industrial Commission stating that after May 1st all cars must be equipped with lights for night time driving 1920 — ICRR crews south of town were hindered by snakes and gophers. Nineteen snakes were killed 1920 — Old Town House (jail) was torn down to make room for relocating the Blanchardville Hill Road 1920 — Legion Post was organized as well as Women's Auxiliary 1921 — Strand Theatre owned by Owen Kelly had large ceiling fan installed 1921 — Charles Farmer won Ford Roadster in drawing at Haldiman-Ingwell Drug Store. A Ford for 35 cents 1921 — Many farmers are losing herds of cattle as a result of Tuberculin testing 1921 — Village Board passed law that board proceedings be published. 1921 — Tax rate was 3% 1921 — Sardeson Bros. mill has recently installed a 20th Century Flour Mill with a capacity of 50 barrels a day 1921 — William Jennings Bryan, one of America's great men is lecturing in Monroe 1921 — Blanchardville is now, in all respects, a modern, up to date city. Every morning at 7 o'clock, a steam whistle is blown at the power house. It is blown again at 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. 1922 — A night marshall (Henry Lease) was hired with duties from 6 p. m. to 7 a. m. 1922 — Wisconsin County boards have authority to provide special highway police to arrest speed violators 1922 — July, A city band was organized with 15 members. Millard Loe was the bandleader. 1922 — American Legion Post purchases a 65 foot flag pole which is erected near ICRR depot 1922 — Rod and Gun Club was organized 1922 — Rodney Rice, a coming boxing champ from Blanchardville, knocked out Tonkins of Mineral Point at Hollandale 1923 — A pure white, perfect pearl was found in a clam in Pecatonica River. Value of pearl $1500 1924 — Well which is being drilled for village, has proved to be an artesian well 1924 — Village board passes an ordinance creating a municipal justice 1924 — Assistant State Superintendent of Schools rules knickers may not be worn at school because of bad psychological effect 1924 — Indians will vote in presidential election for first time this year 1930 — Dr. L. J. Unterholzner began practice in Blanchardville 1930 — October 22, Bridge dedication. The concrete structure spanning the Pecatonica 1931 — New street lights with the eliminating of electric and telephone poles from the street 1933 — Union State Bank paid another 5% dividend. Bank has been liquidated 1936 — January 17, Many local people stranded by severe snowstorm 1937 — Groceries: 3 lb. coffee, 37 cents; ground beef, 17 cents per lb.; pork chops, 21 cents per lb.; steak, 19 cents per lb. 1938 — Albert Cathers retires after 40 years service with ICRR 1938 — Ray Long, former Blanchardville principal became teacher and superintendent of Wisconsin School for Visually Handicapped at Janesville 1939 — June 1, Village President Walter Gould received word that McKellar Memorial Park project has been approved, work will start soon 1941 — December 7, U.S. at war with Japan after Pearl Harbor attack 1941 — Trinity Ladies Aid will serve 25 cent dinner. Menu: Roast pork, mashed potatoes, gravy, baked beans, pie, cookies, buns, pickles and coffee 1941 — Six large bass planted in municipal pool. Pool offers one of best means of propagating black bass and soon there will be thousands 1942 — Basic gasoline rationing of 32 gallons per car for a period of two months 1942 — Stanley Alton Johnson, first World War II casualty 1942 — Over 22 tons of scrap iron collected on special salvage day. Over 100 tons have been collected to date. 1942 — Western Construction Co. took the last of the ICRR tracks out of the village 1943 — Village residents were able to drink their first unrationed coffee after eight months 1945 — May, War in Germany ended. Firing ceases after five years and eight months 1946 — Blanchardville's basketball team won regional tournament 1947 — John Haldiman raises one acre of "glads" and sells flowers to Madison florist 1947 — Social Security tax is 2% on wages 1949 — Mabel Jackson retires after serving as postmistress for 14 years 1950 — W. P. & L. moved into E. J. Barber building 1950 — B. H. S. has enrollment of 276 pupils 1950 — Harry Marshall bowled a 276 game in league competition with a 657 series 1953 — February 26, Pecatonica floods Skaife's store and other businesses near river 1954 — Trinity Lutheran began construction of new church 1954 — Yellowstone Lake became a reality 1961 — Blanchardville Swimming Pool will charge for use of bath house on a family season ticket or by single admission 1961 — U.S. has man in space — Shepard's flight 1961 — Woman's Club held 25th Anniversary program 1962 — Post Office in new location at north end of Main Street 1962 — McConnell's purchase Hwy. 78 Cheese Mart from Ray McGuigan 1963 — A laundromat installed in Swingen building 1963 — Residential portion of Moscow Township annexed to village 1964 — 10,000 receive Sabin vaccine in Lafayette County 1964 — Amish arrive at New Glarus to start colony 1964 — Community began using dial service. There are 575 subscribers 1964 — Ed Benson leaves about $10,000 trust fund for scholarships for B. H. S. graduates 1964 — Bleachers installed at park for football games 1965 — Sportsman's Club repair planks in dam and deepened the old channel under old power house 1966 — Natural gas comes to village 1967 — Marshall's Market closes after 67 years in business. Three generations of Marshalls operated this business 1969 — Improved appearance of Blanchardville Main Street by new store fronts: Trumpy Cheese, Skaife Bros. Market, Cap's Tap, Kiel's Inc., Einerson's Building, Saether's 1969 — Civil Defense has tornado alert system in Lafayette County 1969 — Travel Trailer Park in village 1970 — Picture of Beulah and Morris Strommen and their lefse factory 1970 — Lance Cpl. Daniel F. Gallagher (Marine) first Vietnam casualty 1971 — January, American Legion Building gutted by fire 1971 — B. H. S. Eagles won Regional Basketball Tournament, then lost to Janesville Parker at U. W. Fieldhouse 1971 — Pecatonica received its High School Charter; LaVerne Rick is administrator 1971 — Jaycee Chapter formed 1971 — Jaycette Charter night 1971 — School reorganization — from Eagles to Vikings 1973 — April, Big snowstorm paralyzed this area, 10-12" on ground 1973 — North bank of Pecatonica is filled with rock and dirt to prevent gradual erosion 1974 — New housing unit for senior citizens is constructed 1974 — Business men had brochure printed for area residents 1974 — 75 MM gun from Rock Island arsenal was obtained and mounted by new Legion building 1974 — Woman's Club collects paper to be re-cyled, money from sale to be used for library 1975 — January, Blanchardville Library, a Woman's Club project, is 25 years old 1975 — February, New Charters made by Mrs. Casper Schober were presented.
