The purposes for which it was organized were assistance to the visually handicapped, betterment of the local community and in turn, the betterment of the world. The initial officers of the club were Atty. Eldon R. Hird, president; Thomas J. Watson, secretary; Lyall M. Cowley, treasurer; O. Harold Saether, 1st vice president; Russell E. Hanson, 2nd vice president, and Donald J. Hanold, tailtwister. The first civic improvement project completed by the Lions was an ice skating rink and this was followed by the financial and leadership reorganization and sponsorship of local Boy Scout Troop #129, annual financial support of a boy from the high school junior class to Badger Boys' State at Ripon; sundry improvements to McKellar Memorial Park including bathrooms, athletic field lights, concrete parking bumpers and construction of a shelter house (funds for shelter house provided by Garden Club); promotion of Christmas decorating contests and a "get out the vote" campaign; collection of donations for purchase of an ambulance; erection of signs giving directions to Yellowstone Lake and better highway markers for Highway 78; the purchase and installation of street signs and house numbers throughout the village; assistance in the electrifying of the town clock; participation in the county planning committee to encourage industry to locate in this area; sponsorship of bus transportation; the provision of music for the Christmas season for public listening; and the collection of old eye glasses for use by new eyes. In addition to the foregoing projects, a child was sponsored for one week each summer to the Wisconsin Lions Camp for the visually handicapped at Rosholt, Wisconsin and Miss Patricia McGinnity of Argyle was sponsored as a delegate to the White House Conference on Children and Youth. An international venture resulted in two girls from Norway being hosted at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Paulson and Mr. and Mrs. James Lageson and in reciprocation, Lynn Paulson of Blanchardville was sponsored on a six week's trip to Norway. Some of the fund raising events of the Lions have been the rummage sales, light bulb, broom, candy and fruit cake sales, pancake suppers and talent shows.
