He was born and reared on a farm near Blanchardville, graduated from Blanchardville High School and attended college in Beloit. He was a druggist at Porter Drugs, Detroit. Later he took a position as druggist for Dr. A. McKellar. Melchior Schiesser [photo] Melchoir Schiesser, a Blanchardville pharmacist for thirty years, graduated from the Marquette School of Pharmacy, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a pharmacist for the Walgreen Drug Company in Milwaukee, Chicago and Oshkosh before coming to Blanchardville in 1931. Due to carcinoma, he left his store in 1963 and met his demise on March 11, 1969. He was an active participant in civic and educational fields, having served on the local Board of Education as clerk for six years and on State Educational Committees. In August, 1966, the Blanchardville Businessmen's Association presented him with a plaque of appreciation for many years of service to the community and for his thoroughness and integrity. On July 6, 1943, he was married to May Kelly of Blanchardville. One child, John Melchior Schiesser, was born to this union. Pharmacies, Drug Stores, Permit Stores Three medical doctors who operated drug stores on Main Street in addition to their practices were Dr. T. F. Johnson, Dr. K. F. Rostad and Dr. A. McKellar. Herman Holland, PhG. Druggist, operated a store on the west side of Main Street in a building that was replaced by Fredoline Zweifel's brick building. Thomas S. Ryan, who had a drug store in the Zweifel building, sold patent medicines and confections. In 1917, John C. Haldiman and Milton Ingwell bought the Ryan Store and also the building. They carried a complete line of pharmaceutical supplies and employed a registered pharmacist. Melchoir Schiesser, registered pharmacist, purchased the Haldiman-Ingwell store on March 31, 1931 and remained in the same location until he moved into the First National Bank building in 1938. He operated a pharmacy until 1963 and then the business changed to a "permit" store. It was managed by Mr. Schiesser's son, John, and Dona Robinson until John left for the Vietnam conflict. Miss Robinson managed it alone until the Schiesser family sold to Bernard Gant in 1966. In a sense, Miss Robinson, who had been employed by the Schiesser family for 35 years, went with the store. She was employed by Mr. Gant, who later moved his store across the street into the Orville Kiel, Jr. building. In 1973, he sold to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Severson, the present owners.
