Through the years, 180 people in this community were members of this union with eighteen honorary members. In 1905, Mrs. Archibald McKellar was a delegate to the National Convention at Seattle, Wash. Many of our local members served as county officers. They were: Mrs. O. R. Olson, who served as County Treasurer for 20 years; Mrs. O. T. Olson, Mrs. Almond Holt, Mrs. H. A. Disrud, Mrs. Arthur Hustad, Mrs. T. J. Watson, Mrs. Jacob Syftestad and Mrs. Orville Kiel, Sr. The union paid for and supported many good speakers. Some of the speakers who came to Blanchardville were: Miss Sara Palmer, National Field Secretary; Miss Regnor Frimannsland, University student from Norway; Glen Cunningham, famous mile runner and Olympic track star; Rev. R. Bayley, Executive Director of the W.C.T.U.; Dr. Parish, Rev. Sam Morris, Rev. Jones and others. The work of the local Union is not strictly temperance or locally centered. It is a Christian organization interested in and concerned with the welfare of other people and nations, especially in the time of war. Many provisions have been made for them. The Women's Christian Temperance Union sponsored Essay and Poster contests. Many of the young people in the community have done outstanding work and have been awarded prizes. Miss Ruth Ann Lageson, now Mrs. Oscar L. Vamstad, won the State Gold Medal. She represented York Union. Others who received honorable mentions and prizes were: Charmain Mae Gant, Carol Klassy, Nancy Ann McKenzie, Judith Stoller, David Benson, Carol Erickson, Judy Sherman, Marilyn Anderson, Arlene Olson, JoAnn Albertson, Gary Hermanson, Stephen Sardeson and Cynthia Marshall. The W.C.T.U. has played an active part in getting laws passed which provide that young people in public schools be taught the scientific effects of alcohol and other narcotics.
