Marathon County as originally created, included a tract of territory on the upper Wisconsin River one hundred and fourteen miles long and fifty four miles wide. It remained so until 1874, when a large portion was taken for Lincoln County. The county was first organized by anact of Legislature, approved February 9, 1850, out of territory formerly belonging to Portage County. It was named for a famous Greek battlefield. Ashley - Established June 4, 1900, with Daniel R. Whitney as postmaster. The office was moved to Portage County September 3, 1909, with Sara J. Burk as postmaster. The office was discontinued July 15, 1911, with mail service from Knowlton. While in Marathon County the office was located in Section 36, T26N R7E in the Township of Knowlton. Athens See Black Creek Falls. Barney - Established March 23, 1894, with Charles F. Baneck as postmaster. It was discontinued August 31, 1904, and its papers sent to Hamburg. The office was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 8, T3ON R5E in the Township of Hamburg. Bean's Eddy - Established February 7, 1879, with David Young Estey as postmaster. It was discontinued Mar 16, 1881. The office was located in or near Section 5, T26N R7E in Knowlton Township. Bevent - Established April 27, 1891, with Martin Cychosz as postmaster. The office was discontinued December 15, 1910, with mail service from Hatley. It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 34, T27N R9E in the Township of Reid. Black Creek Falls - Established April 5, 1882, with Louis D. Klein as postmaster. It was changed to Athens January 16, 1890, with Ferdinand A. Strupp as postmaster. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54411. It is located in Section 31, T3ON R4E in the Township of Halsey. Bradley - Established June 10, 1891, with Jeremiah Bradley as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 15, 1893, and its papers sent to Rozellville. It was located in the NE 1/4 of Section 26, T27N R4E in Cleveland Township. Brokaw - Established March 15, 1901, with Williams L. Edmonds as postmaster. It is still in service. ZIP Code 544417. The office is located in Section 2, T29N R7E in the Township of Texas. Brucker - Established February 23, 1882, with Jacob Kiehl as postmaster. The office was discontinued July 7, 1884, and its papers sent to Dorchester in Clark County. It was located in or near Section 4, T29N R3E in Johnson Township. Bushman - Established June 4, 1897, with George H. Bushman as postmaster. The name was changed to Milan November 26, 1901, with Martin Ellingson as postmaster. It is still in service. ZIP Code 54453. The office is located the NE 1/4 of Section 25, T29N R2E in the Township of Holton. Cherokee - Established March 13, 1891, with Paul Umhoefer as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 29, 1902, and its papers sent to Colby. It was located in the NW 1/4 of Section 24, T28N R2E in Hull Township. Colby - Established in Clark County June 22, 1873, with Nathaniel J. White as postmaster, then moved to Marathon County December 18, 1873, with George W. Ghoea as postmaster. The office was moved back to Clark County February 8, 1880, with George J. Walbridge as postmaster. It was moved back to Marathon County March 12, 1901, with Horace J. Blanchard as postmaster. The office was moved back to Clark County March 1, 1957, with Michael J. Stieber as its postmaster. It is still in service. ZIP Code 54421.While in Marathon County it was located in Section 18, Tl8N I-2E in Hull Township. It was located in Section 13, T28N R3E in Hewitt Township when in Clark County. Corinth - Established October 5, 1895, with Otto Newmann as postmaster. The office was discontinued January 1, 1934, with mail service from Athens. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 10, T29N R3E in Johnson Township. Dancy - See Juelson. Denny - Established January 8, 1890, with Charles S.Ouimette as postmaster. It was discontinued January 16, 1897, and its papers sent to Abbotsford in Clark County. The office was located in Section 36, T29N R3E in Johnson Township. East Colby - Established April 5, 1883, with Horace J. Blanchard as postmaster. It was discontinued June 29, 1885, with mail service from Colby. The office was located in the SW1/4 of Section 18, T28N R2E in the Township of Hull. Edgar - Established December 2, 1891, with George Gumaer as postmaster and is still in service. ZIP Code 54426. It is located in Section 12, T28N R4E in Wein Township. Elderon - Established June 13, 1888, with Calvin Day as postmaster and is still in service. ZIP Code 54429. The office is located in Section 26, T27N R1OE in Elderon Township. Emmerich - Established December 6, 1890, with Anton Emmerich as postmaster. It was discontinued May 15, 1905, with mail service from Naugart. The office was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 15, T3ON R6E in the Township of Berlin. Emmonsville - Established January 7, 1891, with Charles E. Emmons as postmaster. It was discontinued June19, 1893, with mail service from Hatley. The office was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 32, T29N R1OE in Plover Township. Fenwood - Established February 19, 1892, with Henry Radant as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 30, 1984. It was located in Section 34, Tl8N R4E in the Township of Wein. Fertilia - Established December 3, 1900, with Joseph Taylor as postmaster. The office was discontinued May 14, 1904, with mail service from Eland in Shawano County. It was located in the NE 1/4 of Section 35, Tl7N R1OE in Elderon Township. Flanner - Established January 19, 1891 with George C. Flanner as postmaster. It was discontinued April 19, 1899, and its papers sent to Mosinee. The office was located in or near Section 16, T27N R7E in the Township of Kronenwetter. Folz - Established March 25, 1905, with Paul Folz as post-master. There is no discontinued date for this office. It is possible it was never in service. Its location, if it existed, is thought to have been in Section 7, T26N R5E in Green ValleyTownship. Frankfort - Established November 18, 1892, with Peter Christianson as postmaster. It was discontinued June 17, 1895, and the records say it was never in operation. Galloway - Established May 20, 1904, with Adolph J. Torgerson as postmaster. It was discontinued June 4, 1976, with mail service from Wittenberg. It became a Community Post Office of Wittenberg June 5, 1976, and is still in service. ZIP Code 54432. The office is located in the SE 1/4 of Section 22, Tl6N R1OE in Franzen Township. Glandon - Established December 21, 1908, with William C. Landon as postmaster. It was discontinued December 31, 1926, with mail service from Wausau. The office was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 10, T30N R9E in the Township of Hewitt. Gohdes - Established August 25, 1894, with Carl Gohdes as postmaster. The office was discontinued March 26, 1900, and its papers sent to Wausau. It was located in Section 32, T30N RSE in the Township of Texas. Granite Heights - See Heights. Halder - Established July 7, 1887, with Josephine Heissel as postmaster. The office was discontinued July 30, 1889, and its papers sent to Mosinee. It was re-established November 1, 1889, with Michael Conner as postmaster. It was discontinued some time in 1908 or 1909. The office was in existence in December 1907. It was located in the NW 1/4 of Section 26, T27N R5E in Emmet Township. Hamburg - See Hamburgh. Hamburgh - Established May 6, 1879, with Bernhard Henneman as postmaster. It was discontinued April 19, 1880, then re- established March 15, 1886, with Ferdinand Matz as postmaster. The name was changed to Hamburg June 19, 1893, with Frank Marth as the postmaster. The office was discontinued February 26, 1986, with mail service from the Athens office. It became a Community Post Office of Athens February 27, 1986, and was finally discontinued September 22, 1989. The office was located in Section 27, T3ON R5E in the Township of Hamburg. Hartsville - Established September 22, 1879, with Schubael D. Knowles as postmaster. It was discontinued October 20, 1881, then re-established January 22, 1882, with Charles Allen as postmaster. The office was discontinued February 16, 1887, and its papers sent to Wausau. It was located in Section 30, T29N R9E in Easton Township. Hatley - Established December 31, 1881, with Thomas L. Moody as postmaster. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54440. It is located in the SW 1/4 of Section 19, Tl8N R1OE in the Township of Norrie. Heights - Established October 21, 1889, with Thomas H. Thornton as postmaster. The name was changed to Granite Heights December 14, 1889, by Thomas H. Thornton. It was discontinued August 15, 1953, with mail service from Wausau. The office was located in the NE 1/4 of Section 26, T3ON R7E in Texas Township. Hogarty - Established June 24, 1881, with John C. Hogarty as postmaster. It was discontinued May 15, 1913, with mail service from Aniwa in Shawano County. The office was first located in the NE 1/4 of Section 4, then moved to the SW 1/4 of Section33, T30N R1OE in the Township of Harrison. Holt - Established December 3, 1900, with Adolph J. Torgerson as postmaster. The office was discontinued October 15, 1915, with mail service from Hatley. It was located in Section 19, T26N R1OE in the Township of Franzen. Hutchinson - See Juelson. Ingersoll - Established December 8, 1892, with Harry E. Daile as its only postmaster. It was discontinued February 6, 1894, and its papers sent to Norrie. It was located n Section 35, T28N R1OE in the Township of Norrie. Johnson - See McKinley 1. Juelson - Established in Portage County February 25, 1875, with Samuel M. Hutchinson as postmaster. The name was changed to Hutchinson March 25, 1879, with Samuel Welland as postmaster. It was moved to Marathon County May 9, 1879, by Mr. Welland. The name was changed to Dancy February 16, 1887, by Samuel Welland. It was discontinued July 31, 1959, with mail service from Mosinee. It became a Community Post Office of Mosinee August 1, 1959, and finally discontinued April 30, 1964. It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 31, Tl6N R7E in Bergen Township. Kelley - established December 2, 1881, with Charles H. Kelly as postmaster. The office was discontinued September 30, 1902, and its papers sent to Wausau. It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 9, T25N R8E in the Township of Weston. Kelly's Mills - See Weston Kitchen - established October 23, 1895, with James Kitchen as its only postmaster. The office was discontinued March 28, 1896, and its papers sent to Hogarty. Its location is unknown but suspected of being in the Township of Harrison. Knowlton - Established February 22, 1856, with Jacob H. Brands as postmaster. It was discontinued August 18, 1857, then re- established August 10, 1861, with George A. Lawrence as postmaster. The office was discontinued September 18, 1865, only to be reestablished again December 14, 1865, with Leonard Guenther as postmaster. It was discontinued January 21, 1867. The office was re-established again October 22, 1868, with Alexander Irwin as postmaster. It was finally discontinued August 31, 1955, with mail service from Mosinee. It was located in Section 28, T26N R7E in Knowlton Township. Konetz - Established January 16, 1888, with August Dalman as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 28, 1890, and its papers sent to Pike Lake. It was located in the NE 1/4 of Section 3, T26N R9E in the Township of Bevent. La Follett - Established September 7, 1907, with Adolph H. Arnold as postmaster. The name was changed to La Follette October 7, 1907, by Mr. Arnold, who then declined the job as postmaster. It was discontinued June 15, 1908, with mail service from Aniwa in Shawano County. It was located in Section 10, T29N R1OE in Plover Township. La Follette - See La Follett. Lamerdin - Established March 18, 1895, with Amalie Lamerdin as postmaster. It was discontinued August 27, 1896, and its papers sent to Athens. It was located in or near Section 11, T3ON R4E in the Township of Halsey. Little Bull Falls - Established March 18, 1852, with Truman Keeler as postmaster. The name was changed to Mosinee July 22, 1857, with Henry Cate as postmaster. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54455. It is located in Section 29, T27N R7E in the Township of Mosinee. Maine - Established January 10, 1870, with John Kufahl as postmaster. The office was discontinued April 10, 1873, then re- established February 7, 1879, with Carl Rusch as postmaster. It was discontinued again February 24, 1881, then re-established August 2, 1881, with William Taege as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 26, 1883, and its papers sent to Wausau. It was re-established May 29, 1884, with William Taege as postmaster. Mr. Taege changed the name to Taegesville June 22, 1891 and it was finally discontinued October 15, 1901, with its papers sent to Wausau. It was located in the NW 1/4 of Section 31, 130N R7E in the Township of Maine. Mannville - Established February 24, 1875, with Peter McGuigan as postmaster. It was discontinued July 22, 1892, with mail service from Marshfield in Wood County.It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 26, T26N R2E in Spenser Township. Marathon - See Marathon City - Marathon City - Established September 8, 1864, with Anton Koester as postmaster. The name was changed to Marathon February 16, 1883, with John Blume as post-master. The office is still in service - ZIP Code 54448. It is located in Section 6, T28N R6E in the Township of Marathon. March - Established April 11, 1892, with Thomas H. March as postmaster. The office was discontinued February 15, 1922, with mail service from Stratford. It was located in Section 4, T27N R3E in Eau Pleine Township. McKinley 1 - Established October 7,1892, with Niels Syverson as postmaster. The name was changed to Johnson April 14, 1894, with Peter Johnson as postmaster. It was discontinued March 15, 1905, with mail service from Ringle. The office was located in Section 12, T29N R9E in the Township of Easton. McKinley 2 - - Established December 24, 1902, with Charles W. Phillips as postmaster. It was discontinued May 14, 1904, with mail service from Eland in Shawano County. The location of this office is unknown. McMillan - Established August 9, 1881, with Samuel B. Powell as postmaster, the second postmaster being Benj. McMillan. The office was discontinued February 29, 1919, with mail service from Marshfield in Wood County. It was located in Section 17, Tl6N R3E in the Township of McMillan. Milan - See Bushman. Moon - Established December 2, 1891, with Zimri Moon as postmaster. The office was discontinued sometime in 1908 or 1909, with mail service from Mosinee. It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 33, T27N R6E in Mosinee Township. Mosinee - See Little Bull Falls. Mylrea - Established November 12, 1900, with Max Kolbe as postmaster. The office was discontinued May 14, 1906, and its papers sent to Marathon. It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 2, T28N R6E in the Township of Marathon. Naugart - Established October 18, 1866, with August W. Schmidt as postmaster. It was discontinued January 11, 1875, then re- established February 1, 1875 with August W. Schmidt again as postmaster. The office was discontinued August 31, 1940, with mail service from Hamburg. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 15, T30N R6E in the Township of Berlin. Nickel - Established November 6, 1889, with Helen Nickels as postmaster. The office was discontinued July 10, 1891, and its papers sent to Elderon. It was re-established August 8, 1891, with Helen Nickels again as postmaster. It was discontinued March 14, 1892, with mail service from Alban. Its location is unknown, but thought to have been somewhere in Franzen Township, T26N R1OE. Norrie - Established June 17, 1880, with Minden Maynord as postmaster. The office was discontinued July 31, 1953, with mail service from Birnamwood in Shawano County. Northville - Established August 20, 1883, with James Girdwood as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 8, 1883, and its papers sent to Black Creek Falls. It was reestablished November 13, 1883, with James Girdwood as postmaster. The office was finally discontinued December 7, 1887, and its papers sent to Dorchester in Clark County It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 5, Tl9N R3E in Johnson Township. Nutterville - Established December 21, 1899, with Ernst Schmidt as postmaster. It was discontinued July 31, 1901, and its papers sent to Wausau. It was located in the NE 1/4 of Section 14, T29N R8E in Wausau Township. Ottville - Established December 29, 1896, with Emma Thorn as its only postmaster. The office was discontinued April 1, 1898, and its papers sent to Johnson. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 15, T29N R9E in the Township of Easton. Sherman - Established January 19, 1865, with Stephen Durkee as postmaster. The name was changed to Schofield's Mills December 9, 1874, with Charles P. Haseltine as postmaster. It was changed again to Schofield March 17, 1881, with Harvey S. Haseltine as postmaster. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54476. It is located in Section18, T28N R5E in the Township of Weston. Snell - Established September 13, 1904, with Julius W. Wagner as postmaster. The office was discontinued August 15, 1913, with mail service from Aniwa in Shawano County. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 22, 130N R10E in Harrison Township. Spencer - See Waltham. Staadt - Established May 24, 1894, with William Mauer as postmaster.The office was discontinued August 15, 1914, with mail service from Stratford.It was located in the SE 1/4 of Section 34, Tl7N R3E in the Township of Eau Pleine. Stettin - established September 8, 1864, with Anton Maier as postmaster. It was discontinued September 15,1906, with mail service from Marathon. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 21, T29N R5E in Stettin Township. Stratford - established January 9, 1892, with John C. Kieffer as postmaster. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54484. It is located in Section 19, T27N R4E in the Township of Cleveland. Sunset - Established February 25, 1899, with Manford C. Thorn as postmaster. It was discontinued July 31, 1901, and its papers sent to Wausau. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 15, T29N R9E in Easton Township. Swan - Established June 14, 1894, with Joseph Schmirler as postmaster. The office was discontinued September 30, 1902, and its papers sent to Edgar. It was first located in Section 10, then in 1889, [sic - probably 1899] it was moved to the SE 1/4 of Section 3, Tl8N R3E in the Township of Frankfort. Taegesville - See Maine. Trapp - Established May 15, 1872, with M.D. Coursy as postmaster. The office was discontinued November 18, 1878, then re- established May 6,1879, with Mrs. Martha A. Callon as postmaster. It was discontinued again August 3, 1898, and its papers sent to Granite Heights. The office was re-established September 17, 1898 with Nellie Callon as postmaster, but she declined, so the order to re-establish was rescinded December 20, 1898. It was located in the NW 1/4 of Section 19, T30N R7E in Maine Township. Unity - Established in Clark County February 7, 1873, with John Sterling as postmaster. The office was transferred to Marathon County April 20, 1874, with S. A. Cook as postmaster. It is still in service. ZIP Code 54488. The office is located in Section 6, T27N R2E in the Township of Brighton. Urwald - Established October 18, 1886, with Herman Veutzke as postmaster. The office was discontinued June 2, 1888, and its papers sent to Wausau. Its location is unknown. Waltham - Established January 19, 1874, with John K. Hayward as postmaster. The name was changed to Spencer July 27, 1874, by John K. Hayward. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54479. It is located in Section 6, T26N R2E in Spencer Township. Wausau - Established May 4, 1850, with Charles Shuter as postmaster. The office is still in service. ZIP Code 54401-02-03. It is located in the City of Wausau, Tl9N R7E. Weber - Established March 28, 1882, with Michael Wagner as postmaster. The office was discontinued June 15, 1903, and its papers sent to Stratford. It was located in the SW 1/4 of Section 13, T27N R3E in the Township of Eau Pleine. Wein - Established August 31, 1876, with Carl Marquarett as postmaster. The office was discontinued September30, 1902, and its papers sent to Edgar. It was located in the NW 1/4 of Section 30, T28N R4E in the Township of Wein. Werlich - Established May 4, 1881, with Edward Graffam as postmaster. It was discontinued May 18, 1882, with mail service from Rib Falls.
