Obituary: Marquette County, Wisconsin: Mary L. LEWIS ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Montello Express [Montello, Marquette Co., WI], October 8, 1887, Page 3 At her residence in Montello, Wisconsin, October 4, 1887, of kidney disease, Mrs. Mary L. LEWIS, aged 65 years. Thus has passed from among the circle of her loved ones, one whose life was pure, whose sympathies were keen, whose mind was noble and whose generous heart ever prompted her to deeds of love and kindness. For nearly a year before her death she was a constant sufferer, but bore her afflictions bravely and passed away surrounded by her family, whose presence she so much desired and whose love and care cheered and sustained her in her final illness. Though greatly desiring to remain yet awhile with her husband and children, she was not afraid to die and well prepared to meet her God. Mary L. BUCK was born in Jericho, Chittenden County, Vermont, February 6, 1822, and with the exception of a short time spent in Canada lived in that state until about twenty-three years of age, when she came west to Indiana, where she met John LEWIS to whom she was united in marriage March 25, 1847 at Hamilton, Indiana. About a year later they removed to Wisconsin and settled in Columbia County and from there came to Montello in June 1851. Her residence here since that time has been continuous except a few years spent in Waupaca County. She leaves to grieve her loss a husband and three children, other relatives and many friends. Her funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at her late residence, the Rev. Christian Sauer conducting the service and her remains were interred in the Montello cemetery.
