Obituary: Marquette County, Wisconsin: Paulina SCHWANKE ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Central Union [Westfield, Marquette County, Wisconsin], March 31, 1922 Mrs. Paulina Augusta Schwachenwald was born in the province, Pozen, Germany, on November 15, 1853, and came to this country in the month of June, 1870, with her mother, brother and grandmother, her father having died in Germany. She settled down in the town of Newton and was married to Mr. Schwanke October 18, 1871. Nine children were born to them, six of whom are living. Mrs. Schwanke was a faithful member of the German Lutheran church of the Town of Newton for more than 50 years. Many were the hardships she had to bear in her life, she was a sufferer for many years being sick and the last 14 months of her life she had been confined to her bed, where she needed care day and night, and her children took wonderful care of her, her daughter, ida, who was with her during her last sickness and with loving hands cared for her mother through many nights of suffering. Her death came on Monday morning March 20, 1922 at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 4 days. On October 18, 1922[sic] and namely just five months before Mrs. Schwanke passed away, was the Golden Wedding anniversary day, of her and Mr. Schwanke's marriage, and their children, and relatives from Chicago gathered and came to honor them on this occasion. The funeral was held on March 23 from the Newton church and her body laid to rest in the cemetery of that church. The services were conducted by the Rev. Meyer and preaced as his text from Revelations Chapter 7 verses 9 - 17. The church was crowded, many friends and relatives being present, and their were many beautiful floral offerings. She will be greatly missed, she was a good true Christian, and a loving wife and mother, and always willing to do for and help everybody. Left to mourn her death are her husband and daughter Ida at home, her son Ludwig in North Fond du Lac, sons Arthur and Ewald residing in Newton, two daughters, Mrs. L. Polinske of Westfield, and Mrs. Paul Gilgan of Crystal Lake and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Those present at the funeral from out of town were her brother-in-law, Conrad Schwanke and wife of Chicago, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Hulda Schwachenwald of Cleveland, Ohio. One more farewell has been spoken One more throbbing heart at rest One more cherished link is broken Dear mother dwells among the blest But we know she's waiting for us And so patiently will wait, Till the day when we shall greet her And enter too, the pearly gate There in the land of pure delight, On that sweet celestial shore, Clothed in robes of purest white We shall meet to part no more.
