Obituary: Marquette County, Wisconsin: Mrs. John SWANLAW ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Westfield Central Union [Westfield, Marquette County, WI], February 17, 1922 Mrs. John, "Grandma" Swanlaw, died Tuesday January 31st. Grandma Swanlaw knew our ways are not His ways; but one thing was for certain to all her acquaintances and friends, she was ready for whatever change death might make. Her pack was prepared, the last journey had been anticipated and her faith was well founded. Grandma Swanlaw was born in Scotland, and was 86 years, 4 months and 1 day young. She was married in the year 1860, and came to this country in the year 1869. At that time she came from dear old Scotland to join her husband, it was considered a journey that was a tremendous task. Mrs. Swanlaw was made of such fiber however, that such a task, for the sake of her husband and family was cheerfully and lovingly undertaken. It is small wonder that the mother country, the land where the heather grows, is noted for its famous mothers and its brawny, courageous men. Mr. John Swanlaw, the husband, had located in the state of Wisconsin. In that state they lived for thirteen years; when they moved to Kelso, North Dakota, where they lived for six months only, having understood that a better country awaited them at Milton, and proceeding in a prairie-schooner they arrived here in six days and located 2 1/2 miles north of town. Mr. Swanlaw also being the sturdy and frugal sort of Scotchman, built his own cabin. Well they knew, too, the hardships and rigorous toil of the pioneer North Dakota families. Nine children were born, 5 boys and 4 girls, five of whom have gone to the land from which no sojourner returns. The husband, Mr. John Swanlaw, died six years ago. The following children are left to mourn their loving mother: John Swanlaw of Westfield, Wis.; Jannet Higgs, Glendale, Calif.; Grace Delling of this town; and William Swanlaw of Ed'nberg, North Dakota. The funeral took place Friday afternoon, February 3. A very large number of people attended. The service was held in the Presbyterian church, where she was a faithful member and one of that number that counts and not one that is counted. Her interest in the Church and her Master's Cause was beautiful. Card of Thanks The relatives of Grandma Swanlaw wish to express their appreciation for the many acts of love and kindness extended to her during her illness and the beautiful tributes paid to her at life's sunset. We wish to thank the choir for their help, and the pastor for his words of assurance. John R. Swanlaw Mrs. Jennett Higgs Mrs. Grace Delling William Swanlaw Mrs. David Swanlaw Mrs. A. F. Panek
