Obituary: Marquette County, Wisconsin: John WAGNER ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Central Union [Westfield, Marquette County, Wisconsin], March 31, 1922, Page 1 John Wagner was born in Germany January 18, 1835, and died in Westfield, Wisconsin, at the home of his son, Gustave, March 24, 1922, at the ripe age of 87 years, 2 months and 5 days. About a year ago he suffered a slight stroke of apoplexy of which he never wholly recovered and last Friday morning he succumbed to general disability. In 1865 he was united in the bonds of holy matrimony with Julia Goetzke. To this happy union three sons and three daughters were born, of which one daughter and his life companion preceded him in death. In 1868 he came to America with his family, and first located at Milwaukee, after a five year stay in the metropolis he came to Marquette county, Wisconsin, locating on a farm near Lawrence where he endured the hardships of a pioneer life. About 25 years ago his wife changed the temporal and mortal things with the eternal and immortal and since then he has made his home with his son Gustave, who with his wife, Mrs. Gus Wagner, have rendered a most valiant service to Father Wagner. He was of a quiet, unassuming nature and disposition, he had many friends, for in his life he always tried to apply the Golden Rule. He was a lover of God's Word and His service, and as long as his physical strength permitted, he was a regular attendant at the services of St. John's Church. He leaves to mourn his departure, 3 sons: Emil, Gustave and John, all of Westfield, 2 daughters: Mrs. Jul. Kruger of Loyal, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Aug. Milbreit of Neillsville, Wis., and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the home thence to St. John's Evangelical church where a large concourse had gathered to show their last respect to the departed. Rev. Geo. H. Scheible officiating in both the German and English language. The remains were laid to rest in the Lawrence cemetery.
