They settled in Wisconsin, and many members of the family grew up on a farm just west of Oconto Falls, including my mother and her three brothers, along with my grandmother and grandfather, and my great-grandmother, many of whom are buried in the Oconto Falls Cemetery. My great-grandmother lived to be 103 years old. I have stories about my mother's early days on the farm, in addition to information from other family members, particularly Emory Temple of Green Bay, who also grew up near Oconto Falls and has written (along with his wife, Jean) several poems and short books on this period. I also have a first-hand account of the arduous trip the Schaal family made from Germany to the United States, and the hardships they faced once they arrived in the United States and Wisconsin.
