PHILIPPI Suring Pioneer Dies On Friday SURING - John Apollinarus Philippi, former Suring resident, died Friday at 12:15 p.m. (1962) at Clintonville, two days before his 79th birthday. He had been ill for four years. Born July 22, 1883 at New Frankin, he worked in lumbering during his early life and since 1916, farmed in the Suring , Route 1, area until his retirement five years ago when he moved to Clintonville. He was a charter member of St. Michael's Catholic Church at Suring and a member of the Holy Name Society. (note: Parents were Matthias and Christine (Brust, Miller) Philippi of Town of How, who immigrated to Wisconsin from Heckenbach, Rheinland, Germany through the Port of New York two months before John's birth, in May of 1883.) He and his wife celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary in 1963. Survivors include his wife, the former Catherine Holl, whom he married September 14, 1908 at Suring; five daughters, Mrs. Louis (Veronica) Kort of Clintonville, Mrs. Kathryn Aldrich of Oconto, Mrs. Arnold (Elizabeth) Fossman and Mrs. Joseph (Cecelia) Malich of Milwaukee, Mrs. Gilbert (Charlotte) Peterson of Underhill; three sons, Matt of Suring, John lf Oconomowoc, and Eugene of Neenah. Also surviving are two brothers, Joe of Suring and Phil (Peter) of Wausau; on half brother, John Miller of California; a sister, Mrs. Joe (Christina) Holl of Suring; 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Soulek funeral home from 3 p.m. today. Services wil be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Leander Nickel officiating.
