(10- 12-1925) Mrs. James Hamilton, 89 yers of age, died yesterday afternoon at 2:29 pm at her home 309 N. Stevens Street, following an illness of several months. Mehitable Jane Hamilton was born in Greenville, Maine on June 30, 1836. She was educated at the Munson Academy of Munson, Maine, and following her graduation served 4 years in hospitals in Washington D.C. as a nurse during the Civil War Period. She was married in 1867 to James Hamilton of Old Towne, Main. Mr. Hamilton died in Omro about 38 years ago. Mrs. Hamilton came to Rhinelander in 1888 and has made her home here continuously since that time. She has a wide circle of friends here and was affectionately known as "Grandmother Hamilton. Two children survive: They are Sumner J. Hamilton of Rhinelander and Sadie Hamilton of Seattle, Washington. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist Church. Her body will lie in state until the services at her home, Stevens Street. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetary. On 10-15-1925 post script in the Rhinelander Daily News: Funeral services were held yesterday in the Methodist Church for Mrs. James Hamilton who died at her home 309 N. Stevens St. Monday afternoon. Interment was made in Forest Home Cemetery. C.H. Roepke, Thos. Doyle, Patrick Johnson, Geo Dusel, Fred Anderle, and H. J. Danfield acted as pallbearers. Additional Comments: Mehitable Jane Young was born in Greenville, Maine June 30, 1836 (other records say 1837) to Elijah Young and Mary H. Cousins-Young. She had 8 siblings. Sarah, Thomas, James, Nancy, Lucy, Mary F., Leonard and Harriet. She grew up along side her Uncle Thomas Young and Mary Dryer's children in Greenville as they all farmed on Pleasant Street. Her cousins were Elizabeth, Elijah, Oliver, Eunice, Emily, Olive, Clara, and Joseph Henry. Mehitable per family stories was a 'nurse' during the Civil War in Washington D.C. Records of nurses were scarce so no record of her serving as a nurse has been found. After the war, she traveled to Wisconsin to marry James Hamilton on May 6, 1865 and be his second wife. Two other daughters died prior to Mehitable's death. Bertha or Berta in 1890 of diptheria while visiting her grandparents and relatives in Greenville, ME and Ina in August of 1891 following a forest fire in Hazelhurst, WI where she was a teacher. Her death was from smoke inhalation she sustained while trying to protect the school children she was teaching in Hazelhurst. Following the death of her husband James in Omro in 1887, Mehitable moved her family to Rhinelander where she worked as a nurse for a Doctor she knew from Maine (per family verbal and written history). Midwifery was her main nursing activity. By 1900 she was cooking in a logging camp in Vilas County. Following that, she took in boarders at her Stevens Street home. Mehitable's only grandchildren were the children of her son Sumner. They were Harry, Ethel, James,and Louis. Mehitable's Young lineage is: Elijah/Daniel/Thomas/David all from the Maine area. Mehitable's Cousins lineage is: James Cousins and Patience Clark from Maine. Mehitable's husband James Hamilton's lineage is: James/Elijah Jr./Elijah Sr./Gabriel #2/Gabriel #1/David Hamilton & Anna Jackson all of Maine.
