F. Fuller Homer H. Benson. THE second pastor, Rev. H. H. Benson, came from Geneva, Wis., in October, 1854, and remained till June, 1858. Homer H. Benson was born in Hinesburgh, Vt., April 22d, 1816, fitted for college at Hinesburgh academy, and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1838. After teaching two years in Hinesburgh academy, he entered the Theological seminary at Andover, Mass., and graduated in 1844. Coming west, Mr. Benson was ordained at the Beloit convention in February, 1845, and installed the same year as pastor of the Presbyterian church at Geneva, Wis., where he served nearly two years. July 8th, 1852, he married, at Chicago, Miss Sabra H. Adams. From Geneva he came to this church in 1854 and served nearly four years. During his ministry here, fifty-seven were added to the membership. Leaving Appleton in 1858, Mr. Benson served as pastor of the Congregational church at Waupun, and the Presbyterian church at Mineral Point. In the Civil War he was chaplain one year in the 10th regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers, till they were mustered out of service. After the war he was the Wisconsin agent of the Freedman's Aid Society, and later agent of the American Missionary Association for Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, and still later he served as district superintendent of the American Bible Society for Indiana, and also agent for Washburn and Beloit colleges. He again entered the ministerial work as pastor successively of the Presbyterian church at Richland Center, Wis., the Congregational church at Wyocena, Wis., a Presbyterian church in California, near San Francisco, and the Presbyterian church at Barton, Wis. After active service for over fifty years, at the age of seventy-five, Mr. Benson located at Wauwatosa, Wis., where he remained till the time of his death, Dec. 1st, 1899, having attained the age of nearly 84 years.
