F. Fuller John D. Willard. FOLLOWING Mr. Gale's pastorate, the church called Mr J. D. Willard, of Newton, Mass. as its seventh pastor, who began his work in December, 1881, was ordained to the ministry and installed as pastor March 1st, 1882, and remained in this field until his death, July 24, 1885. John Dayton Willard was born at Fairhaven, Mass., Sept. 12th, 1856. He fitted for college at Hopkins Grammar school, New Haven, Conn., and entered Amherst college in 1874, graduating in 1878. He studied theology one year at the theological seminary at Hartford, Conn., and two years at Andover seminary, graduating in 1881. He was licensed to preach in 1880, during his senior year. He married Miss Mina D. Beaman at her home in Amherst, Mass., Jan. 31st, 1882. During Mr. Willard's pastorate there were added to the church one hundred and four members. Mr. Willard entered this field with much enthusiasm and carried on the work with great energy. In addition to his regular work, he served the Sunday school, at times, both as teacher, and often as superintendent. He was also an active and efficient worker in the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor, and established the branch connected with this church, which was one of the earliest in the country. He also instituted a system of parish visitation, dividing the parish into districts, appointing two visitors for each district, who, at stated times, gave reports of their work. For nearly six months from July, 1885, the pulpit ministrations were given by Rev. B. P. Raymond, D. D., in addition to his work as president of Lawrence university.
