DURING the period of building the new church and for a few years thereafter, the increase in church activities, with the rapid growth in membership and extension of the parish, which made much additional work, seemed to demand temporary help for the pastor. This was met at once by providing the necessary assistance. IN 1892, MR. C. W. BARNES, a graduate of Yale seminary, was employed during the months of July, August, and September, chiefly as pulpit supply. Since that time, Mr. Barnes has been a successful pastor of a church in Chicago. Miss KATHERINE S. WILLARD, a sister of our late pastor, Rev John D. Willard, was engaged for the months of June, July, and August, 1893, principally in pastoral work, after which she returned to Massachusetts and engaged in similar work in Boston. MR. E. A. PROUTY, the former secretary of the Y. M. C. A., in this city, began work in December, 1893, and remained till July, 1894. His work was largely Sunday-school and pastoral. He has since been serving as assistant to the pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Newark, N. J. MR. KARL MATHIE, following him, served one year, doing considerable pulpit supply work in addition to pastoral. He relinquished this field to engage in educational work, and since 1894, has served as superintendent of the public schools at Wausau. MR. W. S. WESCOTT succeeded Mr. Mathie, and remained in this work a little over three years, till June, 1899. In addition to Sunday school and pastoral work, Mr. Wescott has at times supplied the pulpit with great acceptance. Since his resignation, Mr. Wescott has graduated from Lawrence university, and is now pursuing his theological studies at the seminary in Chicago, in preparation for his chosen vocation, and also serves as assistant to the pastor of the First Congregational church of that city. Since June, 1899, the pastoral work in connection with the recently organized activities, has been so systematized that the urgent necessity for an assistant has disappeared.
