IN the attempt to sketch the lives of those who as members of the church were in some prominent way identified with its progress and development, it has been difficult to determine where to stop. It has been all the more so, since the limits of this little book have been already pushed far beyond the original purpose; yet there are many whose names and faces will readily recur to the older members who perhaps are as well worthy of mention here as those of whom sketches have been given, and whom the compiler would have been glad to give place had it been possible to do so. Among these there will readily occur the names of Deacons Tibbits, Hutchinson, Cross, Brewster, Samuel and Jesse Ballard, and Messrs. Jared, George and William Lanphear, Drs. Whittlesey and Shaw, U. G. Spofford, L. D. Dallas, and E. P. Humphrey, a goodly list but shorter than a similar one of the Godly women who have been equally prominent in moulding the character of the church: among whom were Mrs. Tibbits, Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. J. W. Carhart, Mrs. Sarah J. Jones, Mrs. Sarah Fitch, Mrs. G. F. Peabody, Mrs. Pfennig, Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Laura F. Dunn, Mrs. S. Baird, Mrs. Mary L. Lester and others; also Misses Nancy Knox, Katharine Tibbits, Elizabeth and Annie Hutchinson, Ella Caverts, Olivia Lanphear, Laura and Mary Whittlesey, Angeline J. Smith, and many others who have contributed to the upbuilding of the church and whose names are revered by it. It will be noticed however that sketches are given only of those who died while in the membership of this church,—the only exception being that of Mrs. Doe, the wife of our third pastor. It will be further noticed that some of those referred to above are also mentioned more or less at length in connection with their work in the Sunday School or elsewhere.
