Store In 1910, Joseph E. Cristy, who had a Department Store In Waupaca, Wis., purchased a general store from a Mr. Sullivan located at the corner of North Water St. and St. John's Place In New London. His 21 year old son, Harry B. Cristy, father of the present owner, moved to New London as manager of the new store. The business, now In its 67th year, has been serving the New London area continuously since 1910, selling family clothing, shoes and fabrics. It became the Maytag laundry equipment dealer 20 years ago In 1956. In 1955, the growing children's clothing business necessitated the enlarging of salespace. In March, that year, Cristy's Youth Shop was opened in a building across North Water Street and all baby clothing, and girls' clothing up to size 14, and boy's clothing up to size 12 was moved to the new location. James J. Cristy joined the firm in 1955, the third generation in the business, and is presently the managing partner. The store employs 8 full-time employees and 9 part-time, and occupies a two story building at 119 North Water Street and the ground floor of the building at 118 North Water Street (the Youth Shop).
