On Jan. 12, a group of Appleton businessmen accompanied Mr. Reed, President of the Appleton & Manitowoc Railroad, formerly the A. & N.L. Railroad, to the New London House, where they met some of the New London businessmen to discuss the extension of the railroad from Appleton to New London. The first train of the Manitowoc line entered Appleton the night before. A special election was held on Saturday, Dec. 4, in New London, on the need of a new bridge across the Wolf River on South Pearl St. -- 182 voted against and 144 voted for it. The first and third wards voted in favor of the proposal and the second ward voted overwhelmingly 125 to 13 against it. On Dec. 27, another referendum on the bridge was held, appropriating $3,000. The "yes" vote was 177 and "no" vote was 160.
