Obituaries from The Post Crescent, Appleton Wisconsin Sunday 19 March 2000 Janet C. Bockin Waupaca Age 78, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2000, at her residence in Waupaca. She was born on September 5, 1921, in Larsen, a daughter of the late Carl Norman and Ella (Anunson) Sauby. She married Orrin L. Bockin on July 25, 1938, in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1987. Janet was a member of Scandinavia Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons, Larry (Blanche) Bockin of King and Foster Bockin of Lewisport, Kentucky; two daughters, Lola (Harlan) Hansen of Glendale, Arizona, and Twila Wohlrabe of Waupaca; 58 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and one brother, Abner Sauby of Neenah. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson; a great-grandson and a brother. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at Scandinavia Lutheran Church in Scandinavia, with the Reverend Mark Sabin officiating. Friends may call on Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca and on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service, at church. Interment will be at the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King. A memorial has been established in her name. She will be greatly missed for her cookies, friendships and flowers. Robert J. Carter Age 75, passed away on March 17, 2000, in his Park Ridge, Illinois, residence. Mr. Carter, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, was a longtime resident of Park Ridge. He was a proud World War II Veteran, serving as a pilot in the Navy. He is survived by his wife, Janet M. Carter; his children, Patricia (Alex) Yarmulnik, Carolyn (Tom) Webb, Elizabeth (Curt) Dachelet, Menasha; and John (Monica) Carter; his grandchildren, Ben, David and Michael Yarmulnik, Laura, Sam, Matt, Margaret, Sarah, Peter and Michael Webb, Philip, Stephanie, Pamela, Katie and Timothy Dachelet, Ned and Kyle Carter; a brother, William (Joann) Carter; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Connelly Tampa, Florida A wonderful father, husband, brother, friend and son was called home by his Heavenly Father on March 17, 2000, after a courageous three-year struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). His loving family was with him in his final hours. Michael Joseph Connelly was born in Neenah, Wisconsin, on January 22, 1957. He was united in marriage to Dona Borrell on July 5, 1986, in Savage, Minnesota. He grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, graduating from Appleton West High School in 1975 and the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire in 1979 with a degree in Marketing. He spent his entire career in paper distribution, working for the same company in sales, marketing and management. His last position was General Manager for Unisource Worldwide in Tampa, Florida. He resigned in February 1997 after his illness was diagnosed so that he might spend his remaining time with his family. In his final few years, he had many memorable experiences. Michael's life was marked by accomplishment and he had a positive impact on many people. He lived by the Golden Rule, putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He leaves a legacy of love, honesty and good times to his numerous friends. His deep faith during his illness was an inspiration. Those who shared his life were blessed by his kindness, generosity and example and he will be greatly missed by all of them. Surviving Michael are his wife, Dona; his three beloved sons, Ryan Charles, Brendan Michael and Sean Thomas; his parents, Chuck and Joanne Connelly, Appleton; his three sisters and their husbands, Kathleen (Bruce) Van Eyck, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; Maureen (Brian) Ziegler, Janesville, Wisconsin; and Patricia (Daniel) Conway, Barrington, Illinois. Hadler Neenah Age 81, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Theda Clark Medical Center. She was born October 24, 1918, in Birnamwood, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Rudolph and Martha (Reichman) Kolbe. Adeline was married to Willard Hadler for 43 years; he preceded her in death on January 1, 1988. Survivors include three sons, Bill (Dorothy); Roger (Donna); Mike (Linda); 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Viola (Zigismund) Hints, Neenah; Rose Malouf, Neenah; Angeline Discher, Birnamwood; Lydia Kolbe, Neenah; Velda (Dorrance) Fischer, Oshkosh; other relatives and friends. Age 66, died March 17, 2000, at her home. She was born September 11, 1933, in Ellendale, North Dakota, the daughter of the late Fred and Ella (Handke) Retzlaff. She married Darrel E. Johnson June 26, 1955, at the Methodist Church in Ellendale; he survives. Arlene was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Weyauwega, where she served as organist for many years. She was a bookkeeper in her husband's veterinary practice for many years and served on the city recreation committee for 17 years. She enjoyed her musical activities and church work, gardening, various handicrafts, travel opportunities and reading. Beulah was born September 27, 1908, to the late William and Mary (Waldeman) Kroneman, in rural Deerfield, Wisconsin. She graduated from Deerfield High School and Madison College. Beulah married the late Glenn B. Morkin, of Bloomington, Wisconsin, in 1938. The couple lived in Appleton and then Boca Raton, Florida. She returned to Appleton in 1985. Beulah was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Appleton, helping to set up the church library in the 1950s. She was a caring member of the Appleton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the King's Daughters, Butte des Morts Country Club, and the Century Club, all of Appleton. From their earliest childhoods, Beulah and Glenn prized and nourished every friendship ever made. Survivors include a son, the Reverend Charles William Morkin; two grandchildren, Maggie A. Fritz-Morkin and Patrick W. Fritz-Morkin, all of Green Bay; and a niece, Sandra Skoien, Middleton. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Leslie Kroneman, Janesville, and a sister, Mae Ellestadt, Monona. Marilyn Morley 100 E. 15th St., Kaukauna Age 76, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Appleton Medical Center after a six-week illness and complications from surgery. She was born December 18, 1923, in Milwaukee, daughter of the late Harvey and Meta Allman. Marilyn worked as a bookkeeper in Appleton and the surrounding areas retiring in 1986 from AAL. She enjoyed gardening, camping, traveling, playing cards and dancing. She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Kaukauna. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Leonard, Kaukauna; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon (David) Borree, Kaukauna; two grandchildren, Rebecca Borree, Kaukauna; Joel Borree, Appleton; a brother and sister-in-law: Jack (Dorothy) Allman, Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. She is further survived by her husband's family, Dale (Nadine) Morley, Bowling Green, Florida; Helen Miller, Bloomer, Wisconsin; Lucille Blaisdell, Rush City, Minnesota; Betty Lou (Hugh) Reed, New Auburn, Wisconsin; many loving nieces and nephews. Rock Dale, Wisconsin It's nice to think about the special relationship we had - how we shared so many experiences, how we accepted each other as we were and could talk about our thoughts and feelings easily. How through the years we became closer and closer. Having you for a sister was wonderful because you were also my friend. Beulah was born August 19, 1919, the daughter of the late Dr. Christopher and Blanche (Hurth) Rock. She was a 1937 graduate of Appleton High School. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1961 having received a Bachelor of Science degree. Beulah was active in teaching in Outagamie, Dodge, Winnebago and Waupaca counties. She taught the last 15 years in the Neenah Joint School System from which she retired in 1974 after having completed 32 years of dedicated service to her profession. She was a teacher of primary grades and found particular satisfaction in teaching reading skills to beginners. She was a teacher who allowed her students to be different, to set their own pattern. Beulah belonged to the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, the American Association of Retired Persons and was a former member of Dale United Church of Christ. She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Katherine Rock, with whom she shared the family home. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Edgar Robert and Howard James. Funeral services for Beulah will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lewin Funeral Home in Fremont. The Reverend Virgie Davis will officiate. Varner "Clay" Kaukauna Age 88, died peacefully at his new home, the St. Paul Villa, on Saturday, March 18, 2000. He was born August 10, 1911, in Delphos, Iowa, the son of the late Omer C. "Pops" and Nina (Stephens) Varner. He attended Simpson College and Iowa State Teacher College, leaving just one quarter short of graduation. He interrupted his education several times in order to earn enough money to continue, serving as a teacher in rural schools across Iowa. When he was offered a job with International Harvester, he left college and soon thereafter purchased Decorah Implement in Decorah, Iowa. Clay spent the majority of his life in Decorah as an implement and truck dealer until his retirement in 1985. Many happy years were spent in Green Valley, Arizona, before moving to Kaukauna in 1992. Clay married the former Lelah Hanson in 1939 and the couple had five children, Ruth Schmitt, West Bend; Stephen, Roanoke, Virginia; John (deceased); Faye (Ed) Binsfield, Little Chute, and William (Patricia) of Tokyo, Japan. He had great pride in his 10 grandchildren, his step grandchildren and his eight great-grandchildren. He is further survived by a brother, Alvin (Galene) Varner, Coronado, California. Clay was a devoted husband who visited his wife daily in her final years at the St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lelah; his son John; son-in-law, John Schmitt, and three of his four brothers. It was Clay's wish to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is assisting the family with arrangements. Clay enjoyed each of his homes throughout his life, but he was especially grateful for the many kindnesses and friendships he found in Kaukauna and at the St. Paul Home. His family joins in thanking the St. Paul Home for their kindness which exceeded any professional duty, and the staff at the St. Paul Villa for making his final week one of privacy, dignity and enjoyment. Anthony (Tony) Zitzelsberger Appleton Age 76, died Friday, March 17, 2000. Tony was born September 15, 1923, to Joseph and Mary Bloechel) Zitzelsberger in Brothertown. He later married Celia Rueden on September 4, 1952. Tony owned his own excavating company for many years until he bought a farm in 1973, and through the years became known for his fresh produce. He also enjoyed his licensed deer farm and spending time with his grandchildren. Anthony is survived by his wife; three sons, Randy (Susan), Steven (Sharon), and Mark; and one daughter, Barb (Don) Laux, all of Appleton; one sister, Agnes Schaefer of Chilton and six brothers, Joseph of Chilton, Louis (Margaret) of Brothertown, Norbert (Mavis), Arizona; Leo (Violet), Stockbridge; Lester (Agnes), Appleton, and Gilbert (Shirley), Menasha, and three sisters-in-law, Marion, Viola and Libby. Also surviving him are his grandchildren, Amy, Eric, Kristie (fiance Nick Marx), Brett Zitzelsberger, and Andrea, Jennifer and Melissa Laux. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lawrence, Adolf and Alex.
