Gehlhoff Appleton Age 88, died Wednesday morning, March 29, 2000, at Franciscan Care Center. Sylvia was born January 18, 1912, in Crystal Falls, Michigan, to the late Gabriel and Emelia (Kallio) Ranta. She married Fred Gehlhoff on June 10, 1939. Sylvia was a gentle Christian woman who loved God, her family and her friends. She believed in the importance of education and that everyone should keep learning throughout their life. Sylvia began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse and retired as an 8th grade English teacher. She was an avid Scrabble player and always was eager to try new craft projects. She shared with us the joys of nature. Sylvia had one of the original "green thumbs" whether it was with her house plants or her flower garden. An issue of great debate among family was whether her best pie was blueberry, raspberry or her blueberry/raspberry combination. After she had picked us the berries, they all tasted great. Her chokecherry jelly was the favorite, but she quickly ran out of volunteers to pick those small fruits. Sylvia was proud of her Finnish heritage. Her Finnish SISU carried her through her long life. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Rich Moore, Appleton; her son and daughter-in-law, Leo and Sally Gehlhoff, Stillwater, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Michael (Julie) Moore, Lisa Moore (Jay Gantner), Graig (Chris) Moore, Krista (Scott) Pitsch, Wade (Angela) Gehlhoff; her great- grandchildren, Hannah Moore, Mikaela Pitsch, Shelby Gantner; her sister, Hely Carter; a good friend, Ann Schwaller; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her granddaughter, Joanne Moore; and her brother, Leo Ranta. Funeral services for Sylvia will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 1, 2000, at MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 803 E. College Ave., with the Reverend Charles Valenti-Hein and the Reverend Mara Liz Rivera officiating. Burial will be in Stambaugh Cemetery, Stambaugh, Michigan.
