WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME 537 North Superior Street Appleton 739-1231 Henrietta Deborah Pratt Curtiss Oak Ridge, Tennessee Age 91, familiarly known to everyone as Oddy, passed away April 1, 2000. Born and raised in Appleton, daughter of Harry K. Pratt DDS and Elsie Sebald Pratt, and sister of Katherine Pratt Lison (all deceased), Oddy attended Lawrence College. Before graduating with a major in art history in 1930, she took her last semester at Barnard College in New York City, where she met Columbia student Roy Curtiss Jr. They were married in 1933 and had three children. Roy Curtiss III is George William and Irene Koechig Freiberg Professor of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis. Daughter Deborah Pratt Curtiss is an artist and writer living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and son Peter Curtiss heads Controls Engraving Service in Bartlett, Tennessee. Oddy is also survived by eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A resident of Oak Ridge since 1971, she came to the area, where Roy III was with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Biology Department from 1961 to 1972, for affordable long-term care for her ailing husband, who died in 1973. She immediately became active in teaching pottery at the newly organized Craft Center in Norris, which was sponsored by the Anderson County Community Action Commission. The joint organization was designed to teach craft skills and to increase income from craft sales for low-income people. She and Jean Cole of Oak Ridge co-taught pottery there until 1999 and at the Oak Ridge Art Center/Museum, 1972-1989, enhancing the ceramics facilities at both establishments. Interested in promoting the work of all craftspersons, she also helped develop the Art Center Tree House sales gallery at Proffits Department Store as a cooperative gallery to show and sell locally produced arts and crafts. Community service was central to Oddy's many contributions during her lifetime. She attended the New York Institute of Design, specializing in interior design, but the best job she could get during the Depression was as a part-time clerk in Bloomingdales' bargain basement. Her husband wasn't much luckier and worked as a waiter at Schraffts. Both helped as servers in New York City soup kitchens, which led Roy Jr. to a career in social welfare. He obtained a job as a social worker two weeks before Roy III was born and climbed the ladder of the New York State Department of Welfare. In 1939 they moved to Delmar, New York, a suburb of Albany, where both served as president of the local PTA. When World War II broke out, Oddy worked with a committee, headed by Eleanor Roosevelt, to establish a Children Care Service in Wartime for the children of women who had to work when their husbands went to war - a forerunner of current daycare programs. She and her husband also established a weekly canteen for teen-agers where Roy Jr., an avid clarinet and saxophone player, was the only adult member of a dance band. Oddy subsequently served as a Cub Scout, Brownie, and 4-H leader, and through an adult education program, began to work in ceramics. In 1950 the family moved to Yaphank, Long Island, and Oddy quickly volunteered to help with the polio epidemic at area hospitals. From 1953 to 1963 they lived in Pleasantville, New York, where she took in foster children, hosted foreign exchange students, and headed the adult education program. In 1961 they acquired property in Hampton Bays, Long Island, which enabled Oddy to hone her ceramics skills at Southampton College. She and Roy Jr. also helped found a Unitarian Universalist Church in eastern Long Island. Oddy was an active member of Oak Ridge UU Church since moving to Oak Ridge, and a lifetime member of The Mountain, a UU Learning and Retreat Center in Highlands, North Carolina. She was also involved in the local League of Women Voters and other civic groups, but was mostly known and beloved for teaching ceramic handbuilding through multiple programs to hundreds of individuals throughout the region. She and Jean Cole were honored with an exhibit at the Oak Ridge Art Museum in 1988 in which they included works by their students who had gone on to distinguish themselves in the art. They were similarly honored by the Crafts Center in 1999, and Oddy was made the first honorary lifetime member of the Foothills Craft Guild in 1990. Choosing to live modestly, Oddy also expressed her generosity through contributions to causes she believed in, particularly toward a healthy environment, medical research, population control, human rights, and forward-thinking politicians. Individuals wishing to make a contribution in her memory are encouraged to do so to such causes and/or by planting a tree. Writing a brief history of her life shortly before her 90th birthday, Oddy summed, "[My] life has been very interesting, healthy, delightful and great." A celebration of Oddy's life will be held at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church in May, followed by a tree planting in her memory in the memorial garden. People are encouraged to contact the church, 865-483-6751 after May 1 for the date and to bring an Oddy ceramic and/or story for show & tell. Evelyn F. When I Must Leave You When I must leave you For a little while Please do not grieve And shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you Through the years, But start out bravely With a gallant smile And for my sake And in my name Live on and do All the things the same, Feed not your loneliness On empty days, But fill each waking hour In useful ways, Reach out your hand In comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you And hold you near; And never, never Be afraid to die, For I am waiting for you in sky!
