MAYER - 1904 Joseph L. Mayer, one of the old settlers of the south side, departed this life Monday evening, April 4, at his home on second street, age about 79 years, after a brief illness of but a few weeks. Deceased was born in Bavaria, Germany where he spent his younger days, comming to America in 1849, settling in Milwaukee. He subsequently resided at Oshkosh, Neenah and Menasha for upwards of twenty-five years. He was the first person to open a grocery store in Neenah and held several city offices there. He moved with his family to Kaukauna in 1884, where he opened up a general merchandise business in the store building on the corner of Second street and Crooks avenue which he built and is now occupied by his sons. Mr. Mayer was always one of the prominent business men of the city and always took an active interest in city affairs until he retired to private life a few years ago. Besides his wife, the former Severina Schmid, who has been his companion for over fifty years, he leaves four sons and one daughter, Messrs, Constantine F. Mayer, of Hudson, John G. Mayer, Alfred T. Mayer, Dr. Edward A. Mayer and Mrs John Landgraf of this city and the many friends that he has made during a long and useful life. The funeral occured Thursday morning at 9:30 from St. Mary's Church.
