FRED MAYER, AREA BUSINESS PIONEER, DIES - Kaukauna Times, July 24, 1959.

Fred Mayer, 88, 208 West 7th Street, passed away at the home of his niece, Mrs 
Elmer Doolittle, at 12:55 a.m. Wednesday morning after a short illness.  
Funeral services for Mayer will be held today at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic 
church.

Mayer, a resident of Kaukauna since 1885, was one of the pioneer businessmen of 
the area.  He was born in Oshkosh, January 26, 1871.  He moved  to Menasha in 
1882, at the age of 11, and at the age of 14, he and his family moved to 
Kaukauna.  Mayer started in Kaukauna working at his father's grocery store.  He 
worked there until 1890 when the grocery store, in the building that presently 
houses the Rexall drugstore, was changed to a drugstore.  The new drug store 
was named Mayer Drug store and Mayer operated it with his brother, the late Dr. 
Edward A. Mayer until 1942.

Mayer was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Court 309, of Kaukauna 
and was also a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, Branch 64, Kaukauna.
  
Greenwood Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.  The funeral mass will 
be offered by the Rev. Peter Salm and burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, 
Kaukauna.  Friends called at the funeral home after 7 p.m. on Wednesday and 
Thursday nights and the rosary was recited at 8 both evenings.

Mayer is survived by nieces and nephews.  His wife preceded him in death in 
1950.
