Two weeks ago, Saturday evening, October 24, Mr. Steffen was stricken with paralysis while loading the wagon in front of his bakery, and had been confined to his bed since. Last Tuesday he seemed slightly improved and hopes were entertained for his recovery, but the following day he lost consciousness and did not regain it. Mr. Steffen is survived by five children, two daughters, Mrs. Albert Jansch of Forest Jct. and Miss Ella Steffen at home, three sons, Oscar and Adolph at home, Edgar who is in the navy; one brother, Anton, and a sister, Mrs. George Dichman, both of Indianapolis. The funeral was held from home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with burial in Union cemetery beside the body of his wife. The Rev. E. Upperman, pastor of the Reformed church, conducted services. Mr. Steffen was born in Germany March 21, 1858. He and Miss Marie Steiner came to this country about 32 years ago and were married at Cincinnati January 3, 1883. They remained at Cincinnati two years, Mr. Steffen being employed as a baker there. They then moved to Indianapolis where they lived seventeen years. In 1902 they moved to Green Bay and a year later came to Kaukauna. They moved from here to Appleton but returned to Kaukauna in a short time. Mr. Steffen then opened a baker shop here and had lived here since. He is a member of the Rhine lodge of the I. O. O. F., and the Venus Rebecca lodge of Appleton, the E. F. U. and N. F. L., of Kaukauna. The pall bearers were members of the I. O. O. F. who also had charge of the ceremony at the grave. Additional Comments: I am his great grandson and this obituary was passed down to me by my father. The name of the paper is unknown, but by the wording it would appear to have been local to Kaukauna.
