James died August 11, 1873 New Richmond, Wisconsin, at 67 years of age. He married Elizabeth II Mather in Jackson County, Ohio, September 4, 1838. Elizabeth was born in Brooklyn, Windham Co., Connecticut April 27, 1816. She was the daughter of Eleazer Mather and L. Williams. Col. James Hughes was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, Oct, 12, 1803. He received a classical education at Hampdon-Sydney College, Virginia, studied law, and was admitted to practice in Virginia. He came to Ohio in 1835, and was elected to the legislature in 1838 and 1839. He was married in 1839 to Elizabeth Mather, in Jackson County. James served in the military in Mexican War, 1846. James received a military promotion to Colonel in 1849. He remained in Ohio until 1849, publishing successively the Jackson Standard and the Meigs County Telegram, both Whig papers. In 1849 he came to St. Paul, Minnesota and brought with him the first printing press and outfit in that city, and established the Minnesota Chronicle, which subsequently united with the Register. The first number bears the date June 1, 1849. In November of the same year he sold his interest in the Chronicle and Register and removed to Hudson, where he established the [St. Croix Banner the first paper printed and issued in the St. Croix valley. Martha Hughes was associated with him in its management. James ran for Lt. Gov. in the State of Wisconsin in 1851 as a Whig. Even with substantial backing from the likes of Rufus King he was defeated. His defense of the banking industry and opponent of the Railways were major obstacles which he and his party could not overcome. James died at Hudson in 1873, leaving a widow and eleven children, seven sons and four daughters. Of the sons, Eleazer is a farmer in St. Croix County; George R. is engaged in the real estate business in St. Paul; Edward P. is a lawyer in Anoka; James S. is a surveyor; Charles is manager of the Western Telegraph Company; and Lucius A. is a telegraph operator in St. Paul. Elizabeth was born Brooklyn, Windham Co., Connecticut April 27, 1816. Elizabeth(1) was the daughter of Eleazar Mather and Fanny Williams. Elizabeth died January 28, 1893 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at 76 years of age. James B Hughes and Elizabeth Mather had the following children: i. Eleazer Mather (H.)4 Hughes was born May 23, 1836. ii. George Robert Hughes was born September 4, 1840. iii. Edwin Pendelton Hughes was born July 31, 1842. iv. James Simon Hughes was born January 1, 1844. v. Emily Virginia Hughes was born Jackson County, Ohio February 22, 1846. vi. Ellen Cora Hughes was born Jackson County, Ohio December 3, 1848. She married Charles Ammah Andrews New Richmond, Wisconsin, February 1, 1872. Charles was born Pontiac, Michigan 1847. Charles was the son of Amasa Andrews and Mary Fleming Comstock. Charles died November 24, 1872 New Richmond, Wisconsin, at 25 years of age. vii. Ida Eugenia Hughes was born November 20, 1850. Ida died May 23, 1851 at less than one year of age. viii. Charles Edgar Hughes was born New Richmond, Wisconsin March 8, 1852. He married Lora Fielding St. Paul, Minnesota, November 1, 1876. ix. Tammy Williams Hughes was born New Richmond, Wisconsin August 13, 1854. She married Charles H. Steele September 8, 1877. x.John Marshall Hughes was born New Richmond, Wisconsin September 1, 1856. John died April 9, 1881 at 24 years of age. xi. Lucuis Augustus Hughes was born New Richmond, Wisconsin November 28, 1859. xii. Elizabeth Hughes was born New Richmond, Wisconsin December 21, 1861.
