IVA EULILLE (JOHNSON) ROBERTS of Portage, Wisconsin. Daughter of Benajah Johnson & Sophia Rowley SUBJECT: IVA EULILLE (JOHNSON) ROBERTS of Portage, Wisconsin. Daughter of Benajah Johnson & Sophia Rowley SUBMITTER: Karolyn Roberts EMAIL: gkrob@fullnet.com DATE: Apr 25, 1999 SURNAMES: JOHNSON, ROBERTS, ROWLEY EXPERIENCE—The Free Methodist, Chicago, October 12, 1887 Iva Eulille ROBERTS, Caledonia, Wis., September 30.—For a long time I have been in the fog, under condemnation. I was growing worse and worse every day. I was impatient, suspicious, and hard feeling got into my heart toward those I thought did not use me as they ought. I believe hard feelings in any one’s heart, no matter how great the cause, will drive the Holy Spirit away quickly and farther than many other sins that are considered very bad. I went to the camp meeting at Marshall in this deplorable state. I did not want to go to the meeting, for I would have to be on one side or the other, and I did not have enough confidence in myself to go to the anxious seat, for I had failed so many times before, and I did not want to be a hypocrite. One brother wanted me to testify. I had nothing good to testify to; but I have felt condemned since that I did not witness to what Jesus was doing. A sister also tried to help me, but rebellion was in my heart. That is I had a will, not that I dared set up my will against my God, but I would not go ahead. I received very little light or conviction at camp meeting, but here alone with my little babes in the silence of the night, Jesus came and talked to me, and showed me that in the condition I was in I would be lost. He invited my by his Holy Spirit to cast my every burden upon him, to consecrate all to him. Then came a peace—rest. My faith laid hold of God’s promises, and I was purified, cleansed and sanctified. Praise his holy name for victory! I was freed from these inward corruptions, September 4, 1887. Oh, that I might always be kept by power divine! In a few days after God poured his Holy Spirit upon me in such an abundant measure that I could hardly contain myself. He filled my heart and mouth full of his praises. Praise Jesus! But the old devil cannot afford to let me go yet. I have had severe trials since, and while in the conflict I did not know but what he had gained a point; but when the smoke and din were gone I did not see any marks. Praise Jesus for victory! Theses are truly perilous times. Dear brothers and sisters, please pray in faith that I may be true to Jesus, and do the work he has given me well, and that I may live worthy of Jesus my Saviour. ----------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material.
