Obituary: Alphonzo Crofoot, Portage County, Wisconsin Stevens Point Daily Journal 28 Mar 1919 (fp) Old Resident Passes Alphonzo Crofoot. Who Had Lived in Portage County 63 Years Dies in Buena Vista Alphonzo Crofoot, a resident of Buena Vista township since boyhood died at his home on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the age of 73 years. Death was caused by heart failure and following illness extending over seven years. For the past two weeks he had been confined to his bed. The late Mr. Crofoot was born in Burr Oak, Michigan, October 3, 1845 a son of Mr. and Mrs. Erastus W. Crofoot both of whom were natives of New York. The family came to Portage county when Alphonzo Crofoot was 10 years of age and since that time he had been a county resident. In 1864 the late Mr. Crofoot enlisted in Company A of the Forty-second Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry which did garrison duty at Cairo, Ill. While there he suffered with typhoid fever and did not recover its effects until long after his discharge on Jun 32, 1865. He attended school for a time, worked in saw mills 10 months and was employed in the woods winters and worked on farms summers until his marriage Dec 11, 1870 to Miss Emma Jane Ward. They resided on the Ward homestead in the town of Buena Vista. The deceased at one time held the office of township supervisor. Surviving relatives include the widow, one brother M. M. Crofoot of Wagner, MT., who arrived at the Crofoot home two days ago and one sister Mrs. S. P. Thorn, whose home is in Buena Vista. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the M. E. church in Buena Vista. Rev. I. W. Spitzer officiating.
