Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: Margaret (White) DUNN Gazette, Wed. April 7, 1909 Well Known Lady Dead Mrs. James Dunn, Resident of This City for Many Years, Passes Away After Brief Illness. Mrs. James Dunn, one of Stevens Point's most estimable lady residents, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D.N. Alcorn, at 12 o'clock noon last Thursday, after an illness of about two weeks, the result of grip, coupled with the infirmities of age. Mrs. Dunn had not been well for several months, but was able to be about the house until she contracted the epidemic that so often proves fatal to those in advanced age. Born at Edenborough [sic], Scotland, Aug. 21, 1826, she was in her 83d year. Her maiden name was Margaret White and she was married in her native place to James Dunn, they coming to America in 1855, locating at La Porte, Ind., where they remained until 1872, when the husband came her to accept a position as clerk in a department of the Wisconsin Central shops, under the late Gavin Campbell, who was then master mechanic, and he remained in the service of the company until the shops were taken to N. Fond du Lac. He died about four years ago, June 15, 1905, and since then Mrs. Dunn had lived with her children, most of the time with Mrs. Alcorn. Ms. Dunn was a member of the Presbyterian church, and was a devout, sincere christian, a lady who was admired by all who knew her for her lovable, kind disposition, genuine sincerity and courteous manners. She was also a member of W.C.T.U. and I.O.G.T. Out of a family of thirteen children, but four survive. One son, Henry, was killed in a railway accident 27 years ago, and the others died in infancy. Those who survive are Allan Dunn, of this city; Mrs. Ed. Thiell, of Manitowoc; Mrs. D.N. Alcorn and John Dunn, of this city. The funeral was held from the residence of Dr. Alcorn at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, many old friends of the deceased lady being present to show their last respects, Rev. J.A. Stemen, of the Presbyterian church officiating, and interment followed in Forest cemetery. The pallbearers were John McPhail, P.H. Cashin, Jedd Chenevert, Jas. Mainland, Samuel Adams and A.M. Gower. Relatives and friends present from outside were Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Thiell and two sons, John and Allan, of Manitowoc, and Mrs. L. Choate, of Fond du Lac. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, June 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
