Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: Ellen (Driscoll) GRIFFIN Gazette, Wed., Mar. 10, 1909 Mrs. Martin Griffin Dead Lady Who Was A Resident of Stevens Point Since Childhood, Dies After Illness of Several Months By the death of Mrs. Martin Griffin, of 1016 Ellis street, which occurred at 10:20 last Sunday evening, another home has been made desolate, and sadness has come to many hearts. Mrs. Griffin had been in failing health for a long time, due to an enlargement of the liver, with other complications, and for the past three months had been confined to her bed. While there was little suffering connected with her illness, she continued to fail day by day, and finally passed peacefully away at the hour mentioned above. The end came unexpectedly, the patient falling into a peaceful, quiet sleep, which ended in eternity. Ellen Driscoll was born Nov. 12, 1847, near Boston, Mass., and was therefore in her 62d year. She was the oldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Driscoll, and came to Stevens Point with her parents in the early 50's. October 20th, 1872, she was married to Martin Griffin, and to them were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy, while one son, Walter, was killed by a train at Fond du Lac about five years ago. Besides the husband, those who survive are Mrs. P.B. Gilmore, of Milwaukee; Miss Mayme Griffin, of Chicago; Miss Ella, of Milwaukee; Thos., of New York, and Grace, Ray and Margaret, who are at home. All members of the family are here except Mrs. Gilmore, who is ill at her home. The deceased also leaves two brothers and two sisters, John, of this city, and Dennis, who is in the northern part of the state, Mrs. C.H. McCann and Mrs. E.L. Lemma, both of Stevens Point. Mrs. Griffin was most domestic in her habits, not caring for the glare of society, but devoted at all times to the welfare of her husband and children as well as others who needed her assistance. Her taking away leaves a breach in the family circle that even time cannot replace. A good, kind wife and mother, a worthy neighbor and friend and an esteemed christian has been called to her home above. The funeral was held from St. Stephen's Catholic church at 9 o'clock this morning, Rev. W.J. Rice officiating, with interment in the parish cemetery. The pallbearers were M. Cassidy, Jas. Welch, Eugene Tack, Thos. E. Cauley, John Schmitt and John F. Shea. Mr. Gilmore, of Milwaukee, son-in-law of the deceased, was here to attend the funeral. There were many beautiful floral offerings, including appropriate designs from classmates of Ray and Margaret at the High school. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, June 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
