Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: Charles JOSEPH Stevens Point Daily Journal Tuesday, Mar. 7, 1899 Death of Charles Joseph Had Been a Resident of Portage County More Than Forty Years. The death of Charles Joseph occurred at his home, 307 Pine street, at 3:20 o'clock this morning. Prior to last Sunday night Mr. Joseph had been quite well for one of his years, and did his chores about the house and barn that evening as usual. For the past two or three weeks, however, he had frequently spoken of death, and hoped that when it did come it might come quickly, and not after a long period of sickness. This hope was realized. He partook of supper Sunday evening as usual, but at about 10 o'clock was taken sick and within thirty hours the great change he knew could not in the nature of things be long deferred, had occurred. And it came about as he had hoped it would, for he suffered but little pain and finally sank peacefully into the last long sleep. Charles J. Joseph was born at Wiesa, Germany, June 5, 1814. On October 1, 1840, he was married to Miss Anna Marie Hennig. In 1855 they came to this country and for about two years lived in Jefferson county. In 1858 they settled on a farm in the town of New Hope, but for the past twenty-six years have lived in the city. They had four children, all of whom are dead, the mother, who is in the 83d year of her age, being the only surviving member of the family. Two of the children died in Germany, William was killed by Indians about 1864 while returning from Pikes Peak, and Joseph died six years ago. The widow of the latter, with her four boys, are living at the Joseph house. The deceased was well-known to many of our older residents, and was at all times a most amiable and pleasant gentleman. He and his wife were great lovers of flowers, and during their latter years spent most of their time during the summer season in their cultivation, and their home has long been noted for its flower garden. The funeral will take place from the house Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services will be conducted by Rev. Karl Schmitt of the German Lutheran church. The pall bearers selected are C.H. Rohrdanz, Jacob Haag, Ernest Juenchen, Fred Crueger, Edward Densch and Christian Utpadel. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, 10 June 2004© All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
