Maxfield died at his home at the corner of Church and Shaurette streets at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, after a long illness with stomach and heart trouble. The deceased was born on May 19, 1840 at Goshen, New Hampshire. In 1866 he was married in his native town to Miss Fannie Dodge. She died in 1873, leaving one child, a son, Herman E. Maxfield, now a resident of Milwaukee. In 1877, at Lynn, Mass., he married Miss Laura A. Southwick, who with one daughter, Miss Florence, a student in the high school, survives him. Two other children are dead. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Maxfield lived at Lynn until they moved to Stevens Point in May, 1883. Upon their arrival here, Mr. Maxfield opened a boot and shoe store in the building at the corner of Division and Madison streets, where he conducted a prosperous trade up to 1892. In '91 he build his present residence on Church street and in the following year he erected the building, in which he has been doing business ever since its completion, on the same lot. Mr. Maxfield was an honest, upright business man, whom everyone respected and honored. He has served the public very acceptably both as a member of the common council and of the school board. However, his forte was not in politics. He was a man of strong Christian character and became a member of the Methodist church many years ago, and since coming to Stevens Point has been almost continously the holder of some office in St. Paul's church, having resigned the office of chairman of the stewards just a short time previous to his death. He was also a man of good business ability, and since coming to Stevens Point has amassed a considerable property. Besides his family Mr. Maxfield leaves a brother and three sisters. They are Russell Maxfield and Mrs. Jane Lear of Goshen, Mrs. Quincy Emery and Mrs. Ira Hurd of Newport, New Hamphire. Mrs. Emery made her residence here for several months some years ago and is quite well known. None of these will be present at the funeral. He also has a cousin, Almon Maxfield of Plover.
