Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: James McGILL Gazette Wed., Apr. 7, 1909 James M'Gill Drops Dead While at Work Today, Well Known Citizen Suddenly Expries From Heart Disease James H. McGill, who together with his wife, had been living with their daughter, Mrs. B.L. Vaughn at 1403 Main street since they returned from the state of Washington last fall, suddenly expired at about twenty minutes after eleven o'clock this forenoon. Mr McGill left the house shortly after 11 o'clock and together with Arvin Vaughn, son of B.L. Vaughn, went out into the workshop at the rear of the resident to do some work. A few minutes later the young man, who was a short distance from Mr. McGill, turned around and saw him in a stooping position and going to his assistance thought that he had fainted. He ran into the house and summoned his father, who went out at once, but Mr. McGill, who was then unconscious gasped only a couple of times and expired. His death was due to heart trouble with which he had long been afflicted, being close to death's door a number of times before. The deceased was born at Ogdensburg, N.Y. and was 63 years old the 4th of last March. During the war he was a private in Co. F, 165th N.Y. Reg., and soon after the close of the war came to Stevens Point and had since worked at his trade as a carpenter. One daughter, Mrs. B.V. Martin, died about seven years ago, and besides his wife he leaves two step-daughters, Alice Estus, who resides near Fairhaven, Wash., and a step-son, Henry Tupper, also a resident of the latter state. He also leaves one sister Miss Annie McGill at Ogdensburg, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. McGill returned from Washington last fall, after living there about three years. He was a good citizen, courteous and gentlemanly, and many friends will be pained to learn of his sudden death. The funeral, it is expected, will take place from the residence of Mr. Vaughn at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, 10 June 2004© All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
