Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: Stephen MONTASAVIZ Stevens Point Daily Journal Thurs. Feb. 9, 1899 Buried in a Well Stephen Montasaviz, a well-known Polish resident of the town of Stockton, was buried in a well at about 10 o'clock Wednesday forenoon. The well was 70 or 75 feet deep and it is stated that he went down in it to make some repairs, and that when about twenty feet from the bottom, struck the curbing with his hammer, whereupon the well at once caved in. Parties were watching his movements from the top and it is stated that as soon as the cave in commenced he fell head first towards the bottom and then was immediately overed by the falling earth. The accident created great excitement and the whole neighborhood turned out and the work of digging for the body was at once commenced. This, however, was a great task, and at last accounts had not been accomplished. Montsaviz was from 30 to 35 years old and leaves a family. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, 10 June 2004© All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
