Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: John NELSON Gazette, Wed. April 14, 1909 Was Prominent Lanark Farmer John Nelson, one of the best known farmers in the town of Lanark, and who had numerous friends in this city and throughout other parts of the county, died at St. Mary's hospital, Oshkosh, last night. In company with W.H. Leahy, a neighbor, Mr. Nelson went to Oshkosh a week ago last Saturday, where he was operated upon for abdominal trouble, but was in too weakened a condition to withstand the effects of the operation. The body was brought to Amherst on the Wisconsin Central at noon today and it is expected that it will be taken to his former home in Lanark. Funeral services will probably be held at St. Patrick's church in that township next Friday morning, conducted by Rev. J.E. Meagher, with interment beside his parents in the parish cemetery. Mr. Nelson was a bachelor, between 52 and 53 year of age, and had always lived in Lanark. He was not only the possessor of a valuable farm, but was otherwise comfortably provided with the world's good and for the past several years had taken life comparatively easy, his farm being in charge of a tenant. The only near relative is a siser, Mrs. Theo. Myers, of Amherst. "Johnnie" was a good hearted, whole souled gentleman, who always had a cherry greeting for his friends, and his memory will long be cherished by all who knew him. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, June 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
