He came west in 1857 when he was about 24 years old and after a short residence at Muscatine, Iowa, came to Stevens Point, where he resided continuously until 1892, except for some three years he spent at Hannibal, Mo., running a lumber yard. In his younger days he was engaged in the lumber trade and made quite a fortune which, however, in later life slipped through his fingers. After abandoning the lumber business he was engaged for many years as a clerk for Benj. Burr. For the past dozen years he has been in retirement except for the gratification of a love for training high bred horses. He was married 38 years ago to Miss Clara E. Roe, in the same house where his funeral was held today. His wife and four children survive him. The children are Mrs. J.D. Otis of Granite Falls, Minn., John Orrick of Milwaukee, Mrs. J.J. Prescott of Melrose, Minn., and Will Orrick of Mellen, Wis. All were present at the funeral. In 1892 the family moved to Ashland, where they lived until 1897 when Mr. and Mrs. Orrick moved to Milwaukee to live with their son John. Mr. Orrick had been in reasonably fair health for a man of his age up to the hour of his death. Saturing morning he went out shovel snow off the walk. He only lifted the shovel about four times when he fell over and died before assistance could reach him. Those who came up with the body this morning were, Mrs. Orrick, Mr. and Mrs. John Orrick, Mr. and Mrs. William Orrick of Dubuque. The last named gentleman is the only brother of the deceased. The pall bears were John Finch, John W. Ball, D.J. Ellenwood, A.F. Wyatt, Andy Scott, and A.G. Hamacker. Mr. Orrick was a gentleman of the kindliest nature and most generous impulses, a person whom it was always pleasant to meet. He leaves many old friends in this city who will always cherish for him the tenderest regard. ************************************************************************ Submitted by Kathy Grace, June 2004 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************
