Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: George STRECKEL Stevens Point Daily Journal April 14, 1899 Proprietor of the Wisconsin House Passes Away George Streckel, proprietor of the Wisconsin house on Clark street, died in his rooms at the hotel this morning at 8:45 o'clock, after an illness of nearly six weeks with typhoid pneumonia and complication. He was taken with a very severe attack of pneumonia on Monday, March 12, and for some days his life was despaired of but he finally seemed safely on the way to recovery when an abscess began forming on the submaxillary glands on the right side of the neck. The abscess broke internally Thursday and being in a very weak condition he was unable to stand the shock. George Streckel was born at Baden, Germany, on May 4, 1835. He came to this country in 1869 and after spending a short time in New York, came to Stevens Point in March. About 28 years ago he married Mrs. Adam Sames, who at that time was running the house in which they still reside. They have kept the house almost continously ever since except for a short time when it was rented. Three children were born to them of whom only one, Miss Josephine, still survives. He also leaves three step-daughters, Mrs. F.A.Degen and Mr. L.A. Pfeiffer of this city and Mrs. F.H. Builer of Wausau. He [was] a brother of Mrs. Charles Krembs of this city and of the late Mrs. Chas Kline of Marathon county. Mr. Streckel was a veteran of the German wars and was a member of the local Krieger Verein. He served nine years in the infantry of the German army and saw active service at Schleswig-Holstein. The Krieger Verein will attend the funeral in a body. The funeral will be held from St. Stephen's catholic church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
