Obituary: Portage County, Wisconsin: Augusta (Otto) WALKOWSKE Stevens Point Daily Journal February 27, 1899 Mrs. Matthew Walkowske Mrs. Matthew Walkowske died at her home at 442 Madison street at 10 o'clock Sunday night, as the result of a cancer on the intestine. Miss Augusta Otto was born at Ripkow Germany, on October 3, 1853. She was married to Matthew Walkowske twenty-two years ato. They removed from Germany to Stevens Point in 1882 and the husband has been employed continuously since then at the Wisconsin central shops. Last summer when at work in the yard one day, Mrs. Walkowske strained herself and has sinice had three serious sick spells as a result. The last occured [sic] four weeks ago when she narrowly escaped death with strangulated hernia. The physicians succeeded in reducing the hernia by an operation, which was entirely successful. The attending physician was Dr. F.A. Southwick and he was assissted by Dr. von Neupert. The wounds made in this operation entirely healed and the lady was able to sit up two weeks ago Sunday. On the following Tuesday she was again taken ill and for nearly two weeks suffered with obstruction of the intestine. Sunday after dinner a second operation was performed by Dr. Southwick, assissted by Drs. von Neupert, W.W. Gregory and F.A. Walters. They found a cancer on the intestine so far advanced as to be beyond all possibility of help. The lady was made as comfortable as possible and lived until 10 o'clock that evening. Before her death she called her family about her and had a very touching farewell talk with each one. Besides her husband, she leaves three children, Miss Hattie, Emil and Eddie. The latter is the boy who had his arm crippled for life by the careless handling of a gun by a companion a couple of years ago. She also has a sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Lightfoot of Janesville, who came up this evening to attend the funeral. she also leaves an aged mother and a sister in Germany. Her father died at the age of 45 and the deceased lady always prophesied that she would die at the same age. The funeral will be held Wednesday from St. Paul's German Lutheran church, Rev. Carl Schmidt officiating. The short service at the house will commence at 2 o'clock. Stevens Point Daily Journal Mar. 1, 1899 The funeral of Mrs. M. Walkowske was helf from St. Paul's German Lutheran church at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. A short service was also held at the house. The funeral was largely attended, about 40 members of the Ladies' Aid attending in a body. Rev. Carl Schmidt officiated.
