Samuel Yates Surprised and Presented With a Gold-Headed Cane. Last evening about twenty couple of Mr. S. Yates' relatives and warmest friends gathered at an appointed place, and from thence to his home, 919 Lake avenue. The surprise was a complete success, as Mr. Yates was preparing to retire. He met his friends with his usual cordiality, his daughter, Miss Minnie, filling her part as hostess with grace characteristic to her. Two or three 1 hours were spent very pleasantly at cards. Refreshments were then served, after which Mr. Peter Etchells stepped forward, and in behalf of the company presented Mr. Yates with a beautiful gold-beaded cane, saying: Mr. YATES:-In behalf of those present here .to-night, I present you with this slight token of their esteem, hoping as you walk the busy streets of Denver, you will some times give a thought to the friends you left in Racine. May health. happiness and prosperity attend yourself and family is our sincere wish. Mr. Yates, though surprised, thanked his friends and inyited them to come to Denver and see him on dress parade. Cards were again resumed and at a late hour his friends bade him good night with many regrets at loosing him ant his family, and wishing them success in their future home..
