EVERY KNOWN REMEDY FAILED TO CHECK FLOW One of Few Remarkable Cases Known -Deceased Was Veteran of Civil War. Mason and Member of Woodmen Lodge. After bleeding at the nose for ten consecutive days, efforts of three physicians failed to stop the hemorrhage, James Smith, an old pioneer of Racine and Kenosha counties, a soldier of the civil war, member of the Masonic fraternity. and a Woodman, died at his home in the village of. Union Grove, at 12 o'clock today. Ten days ago Mr. Smith was a well man. Suddenly and without warning he was taken with the nose bleed. Nothing was thought of this at first, but efforts on his part: to stop the flow of blood failed. Physicians were then called in, and although they resorted to every known remedy, could not reduce the hemorrhage. When the nose was plugged up with cotton or other substance, the blood poured out of the mouth. In a few days Mr. Smith commenced to grow weak from the loss of blood and lack of nourishment. Two days ago the physicians stated that he could not live, and as above stated, he passed away today. The case is considered remarkable and one of 1 very few where persons have died of nosebleed. ENGLISH BY BIRTH. Mr. Smith was born in England. When a boy he settled in Brighton, Kenosha county, and learned the blacksmith trade. On October 28, 1869, he married Miss. Hannah Murgatroyd, who with three children survive him. Some years ago Mr. Smith retired and has been a resident of Union Grove for years. When the civil war broke out he went to the front with. Company K. He was also a member of the Woodmen and Masonic orders, The surviving children are Charles Smith, Union Groves Newton Smith, president of a bank at Newton, Kansas: Mrs. Harvey Adams, of Union Grove. When he died he was 61 years old. Before death he selected pallbearers, three: from the Woodmen. viar Peter Dunkirk. J, C. Drury, Thomas Bufton, and three from the G.A. R., Dan Jones, I. Mores, W. G. Powles. The funeral will take place some day next week from the Congregational church and Rev. Mr. Breeze will officiate. In the death of Mr. Smith there passes away an old resident. a good husband and father, a loyal citizen and an honest and upright man.
