Clarence Van Valin, son of Oliver and Jane Van Valin, was born on the Van Valin homestead, Oct. 5, 1857, died at the same place, Oct., 14, 1914. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Eda Kobliske, who passed away in 1888. On Oct. 29, 1890, Miss Annie Griebel became his bride and four sons were born to them: Henry, Paul, Albert, and Julius. When the father and mother wished to retire from the farm, Clarence was the son who took the homestead carrying the work on with success due to thrift and hard work. He was a faithful member of the M.E. Church at this place, where he will be greatly missed, for even though his illness has covered over a year, he very seldom was absent from services. He was a good neighbor and square and upright in his dealings with mankind. The funeral services were held from the church Saturday, Oct. 24, Rev. Manaton officiating. O. and H. Greeley, R. and H. Clark, W. L. Brown and F. Utter acted as pall bearers. Besides the widow and sons, who are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father, there are three sister, Mrs. Mary Humbert, of Montana; Mrs. Margaret Humbert and Mrs. Frances Van Aernam of this place and four brothers, Alfred of Nebraska, F. D. of Milwaukee; and Clement and Oliver of this place.
