JAMES M. BALLARD DIES SUDDENLY

WAS EARLY SETTLER IN EVANSVILLE

Mr. James Ballard passed away Wednesday afternoon at the home of his son,
E. J. Ballard. His death was due to a gradual decline caused by increasing
old age, and was not unexpected as he had been failing very rapidly of
late.

Mr. Ballard was 90 years of age, having been born at Ogden, Monroe County,
N. Y., April 2, 1824. When he moved to Alleghany County, N. Y., where he
lived until he came to this state in 1861.

He was married to Miss Theda L. Brown of Ogden, N. Y., December 14, 1846
and in 1861 they removed to Wisconsin and settled in the town of Union. He
was engaged in the stock and grain business for many years. For many years
he held the office of deputy sheriff, and also held various other offices.
He had been a member of the Masonic order since 1866, and was very active
in support of everything that made for the improvement and betterment of
the community.

Mr. Ballard is survived by his wife and two sons, E. J. and O. B., both of
this city. Two other sons, Volney and Novello, died before him. He is also
survived by two brothers, John and Miles, both of New York.

The funeral services will be held at the home of E. J. Ballard Friday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. N. G. Oliver will conduct the services.
