Devereux. Mrs. John C. Devereux passed away at her home in this city, Monday afternoon, Feb. 4, 1907, aged 65 years. Last Friday, Mrs. Devereux was suddenly stricken with paralysis, while sitting in a chair, and everything possible was done for her, but she did not gain consciousness. Miss Phoebe Johns was born in Beaver County, Penn,. and on May 28, 1860 was married to John Devereux, a native of New York state; most of their married life was spent on Burr Oaks farm about four miles northwest of Evansville. A few years ago, Mr. Devereux purchased a residence on Garfield Ave., and moved to this city. Mrs. Devereux was a quiet woman, and one who possessed a wide circle of friends; she cared little for society and devoted her entire time to her family and household duties. She was greatly beloved for her kindly, gentle manners, and for the genuine interest she always took in the sick. Since the death of her son's wife, Mrs. Arthur Devereux (nee Lillian Sayles, she has been a devoted mother to the infant son that was so suddenly left motherless. Besides her husband, Mrs. Devereux is survived by two daughters and one son: Mrs. John Wall of Union village; Mrs. Truman C. Davis, town of Union and Arthur B., who resides at the parental home. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the community in their hour of sorrow. The funeral services will be held from the residence on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock.
