Obituary: Rock County, Wisconsin: Child HAKES ************************************************************************ Submitted by Ruth Ann Montgomery, April 2008 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ A sixteen-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hakes, residing on the Courtright place just west of town, was so frightfully burned that it survived but a few hours Thursday forenoon. While the father was at work in the field and the mother had gone to town on an errand, two of the older children got hold of a lamp which they filled with gasoline and placing it on the stoop in front of the child proceeded to light it. The explosion that instantly followed scattered the burning fluid over the child's clothing. Its screams brought the child's father from the field who succeeded in putting out the flames but not until the clothing was about all burned off the babe and the flesh explosed to the blaze deeply burned. Physicians were summoned but the little one was past all help and died shortly in great agony. -- The Reporter. "Edgerton" news, Evansville Review, August 8, 1907, Evansville, Wisconsin
